I find myself doing this so much...

What's it called when you constantly feel the need to scratch your scalp and get scabs and stuff. Bc I can't help myself. I don't pull my hair out. I can’t stop myself, even though I don’t pull out my hair. I catch myself doing this all the time, and I’m not sure if it’s linked to anxiety or something else entirely. It’s frustrating that I just can’t kick the habit. The worst thing about is when your about to pull the scab off, it gets tangled in your hair AND LOSE IT.

... Read moreIt's such a relief to know I'm not the only one constantly battling the urge to scratch my scalp. That burning question, 'Does anyone know what it's called when you constantly feel the urge to scratch your scalp?', has been on my mind for ages. It feels like a secret struggle, right? The frustration of creating scabs and then getting them tangled in your hair is just… ugh. After some digging and talking to others, I've learned there are a few terms that might describe this. Sometimes it's linked to something called 'excoriation disorder' (also known as dermatillomania), which is basically compulsive skin picking. While it's not always about hair pulling, the constant scratching and creating scabs can definitely fall under this umbrella. There's also 'psychogenic pruritus,' which means itching caused or worsened by psychological factors like stress or anxiety. This really resonated with me because I’ve always suspected my head scratching anxiety connection. Speaking of anxiety, I've noticed a huge correlation between my stress levels and how much I scratch. When I'm feeling overwhelmed or nervous, my hand just instinctively goes to my head. It almost feels like a bizarre coping mechanism, a way to release tension, even though it just makes things worse in the long run with all the scabs. It's a habit that's incredibly hard to break, even when you know you shouldn't be doing it. I've been trying a few things to break the cycle, and maybe some of these could help you too. One thing that sometimes works for me is keeping my hands busy. Fidget toys, knitting, even just holding something smooth can sometimes distract my fingers. I also try to be mindful of when I'm scratching – is it when I'm watching TV, on the phone, or feeling particularly stressed? Just noticing it is a first step towards gaining some control. Keeping my nails super short has been a game-changer; it makes it harder to actually cause damage. Some people find success with gentle scalp massages using a soft brush instead of scratching, or applying a cooling scalp serum if there's any actual itch to soothe the area. I've also heard of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) being really helpful for these types of compulsive behaviors, though I haven't tried it myself yet. It's about retraining your brain and finding healthier ways to cope with the underlying feelings. It's so important to remember that if this is really impacting your life, causing pain, or making you feel self-conscious, it's okay (and encouraged!) to talk to a doctor or therapist. A dermatologist could rule out any underlying skin conditions, and a therapist could help explore the anxiety link and give you more coping strategies. We're not alone in this, and finding what works for you is key. It's a tough habit to break, but every small step counts. Let's keep supporting each other!

I do the same, it’s a stim for me. I mostly don’t even realize I’m doing it, same with nail picking.

13 Things I Tell Myself When I Don’t Want To Study

i guess you can say, this funk was extra funkyyy and lasted much longer than the low seasons i've had in the past. fortunately, it wasn't so bad to where i stayed in bed all day, but it did get to the point where i had no motivation to do anything, and when i did take action, i felt numb.
