Should I cut off my friend after she lied?

My best friend and I have been like family since childhood. When I was pregnant, she was my first call after my mom. She got married years ago (I was her maid of honor) and moved 2 hours away but we chatted daily.

Then she called sobbing and begging me to rush to the hospital, she’d lost her baby at 7 months. I had no idea she was pregnant, but I dropped everything. Stayed with her, bathed her, fed her, slept next to her to comfort her. I was heartbroken for her, no questions asked.

Now she’s healing, but I want to distance myself. Because everyone knew about her pregnancy except me. A mutual friend said she’d asked people not to tell me, planning to share only at the baby shower. She’d avoided seeing me for months and lied about getting her period every time I asked. I was her biggest supporter, but she hid this huge part of her life from me on purpose. Should we talk it out? But I don’t care about her reason.

... Read moreFriendship can be one of the most rewarding—and sometimes challenging—relationships in our lives. When a trusted friend keeps a major secret, such as a hidden pregnancy, it can feel like a deep betrayal. It’s natural to wonder if you should cut ties after such an experience, especially when the person you trusted lied repeatedly. But before making a definitive decision, there are several important factors to consider. First, it’s crucial to understand that people cope with trauma and difficult situations in different ways. Your friend’s decision to hide her pregnancy from you and others may have stemmed from fear, shame, or the need to protect herself emotionally during a vulnerable time. The fact that she also suffered a late-term miscarriage adds immense emotional complexity. While this doesn’t excuse the dishonesty, acknowledging her pain can help frame the situation with empathy. Communication is key in situations like this. Even if you feel uninterested in her reasons, having an open and honest conversation can provide much-needed clarity. Express how the secrecy and lies impacted your trust and feelings. Allow her to share her perspective too. This dialogue might not change what happened, but it can pave the way for understanding and healing. Distancing yourself temporarily to process your feelings is a valid choice. Grief and betrayal often bring confusion and hurt that take time to resolve. However, completely cutting off a lifelong friendship without attempting a conversation can leave unresolved emotions and regret. Lastly, remember that trust is rebuilt over time through consistent and honest behavior. If your friend shows genuine remorse and commitment to transparency, repairing the friendship might be possible. On the other hand, if dishonesty continues or the relationship causes chronic distress, prioritizing your emotional well-being by creating boundaries is essential. Navigating the aftermath of a friend’s hidden pregnancy, miscarriage, and lies is never straightforward. It often requires patience, empathy, and self-reflection to make the best decision for your heart and mind. Whatever choice you make, ensure it supports your healing while respecting the history and complexities of your connection.

In all honesty , your reaction is probably the one she was looking forward to hence why she wanted to surprise you. Especially after what she went through & you being by her side, I don’t think she meant any harm by it rather than her just wanting to make it special

Sounds like she was trying to surprise you. Ask her, before jumping to the “my feelings are hurt so I’m leaving” solution to the problem.
