... Read moreMy loc journey has been one of the most transformative experiences I’ve ever embarked on, truly teaching me the beauty of patience and self-acceptance. When I first considered starting locs, I spent hours researching, pondering what my 'Day 1 of Starter Locs' would look like and what to expect in the months to come. It’s more than just a hairstyle; it's a commitment to growth, both for your hair and your spirit. For anyone considering starting locs, the initial decision about how to begin is crucial. There are several methods – comb coils, two-strand twists, braids, or even interlocking. My stylist and I discussed the 'starter loc size chart' extensively to ensure my desired look and density. I wanted a medium size to allow for versatility and fullness, which influenced the parting size and method used. Don't underestimate this step; it truly sets the foundation for your entire loc journey. My Day 1 felt liberating, a fresh start, albeit with tiny, neat coils that looked nothing like the mature locs I envisioned. The first few months, often called the budding phase, were a test of patience. Your hair begins to knot and intertwine, but it can look a bit frizzy and unkempt to the untrained eye. This is a natural part of the loc stages. Around the 2-3 month mark, I had my '1st Retwist & Style.' This was a game-changer! Seeing my locs defined and neatly styled for the first time since starting was incredibly encouraging. It gave me a glimpse of their potential and reassured me that the process was working. Managing frizz during this stage sometimes felt challenging, but learning to embrace it as a sign of progress was key. As I moved past the initial budding into the locking phase, approaching my '8 months loc'd' milestone, I witnessed my hair truly starting to mature. The individual strands were no longer just coils; they were forming solid locs, tightening and shrinking slightly as they matured. This period brought a newfound confidence in my hair. I started experimenting with different styles beyond just a simple retwist, like updos and ponytails, realizing the versatility my locs offered. Moisturizing became a daily ritual, ensuring my scalp and locs remained healthy and hydrated, using light oils and rosewater sprays to avoid buildup. Through every phase of this loc journey, from the tiny starter locs to the thriving 8-month mark, I've learned to appreciate the unique texture and strength of my hair. It's a personal journey that requires consistency, the right products for your hair type, and most importantly, an abundance of patience. If you're on your own loc journey, remember to celebrate every small milestone, embrace the changes, and trust the process. Your hair is growing, and so are you!
