Spinach and Kale! Let’s watch them grow together
When I first started my balcony garden, I had so many questions, and one of the biggest was, "Can you grow kale and spinach together?" I love both of these superfoods and wanted to maximize my limited space. After a bit of research and a lot of trial and error, I'm thrilled to say the answer is a resounding YES! With a few simple considerations, these two leafy greens can absolutely thrive side-by-side, giving you a continuous supply of fresh, homegrown produce. My journey began with choosing the right container. I opted for a long, rectangular metal planter, which was perfect for accommodating both plants while making the most of my sunny balcony. The key is to ensure your planter is deep enough – at least 6-8 inches – to allow their root systems to develop properly. Next, soil is crucial! I filled my planter with a rich, dark soil mix, ensuring good drainage but also excellent moisture retention. Both kale and spinach appreciate consistently moist, fertile soil, so a quality potting mix is non-negotiable. Now, for the planting itself. I started with young kale plants at one end of the planter and small spinach plants at the other. While they can coexist, it's important to give them a little breathing room. Kale tends to grow larger and taller, with its crinkled green leaves reaching upwards, while spinach stays more compact and low-growing. I spaced my kale plants about 6-8 inches apart and my spinach plants about 4-6 inches apart. This arrangement allows both to get adequate sunlight and air circulation, preventing overcrowding and potential fungal issues. Watering is where consistency really pays off. Both kale and spinach are thirsty plants, especially when grown in containers on a sunny balcony. I made sure my dark soil stayed evenly moist, but never waterlogged. I usually check the soil moisture every day, and on hot days, sometimes twice. Mulching the surface with a thin layer of compost can also help retain moisture and keep the soil cool. As I watched my plants go through their early growth stages, it was amazing to see how quickly they responded to consistent care. Another tip for success is providing adequate nutrients. Since they're both heavy feeders, I incorporated a balanced organic fertilizer into the soil at planting and then provided a liquid feed every few weeks. This helped support the vigorous growth of both my kale and spinach. Keep an eye out for pests, too. While generally robust, both can attract aphids or cabbage worms. I found that a simple spray of neem oil or even just a strong blast of water could keep most issues at bay without resorting to harsh chemicals. Harvesting is the most rewarding part! For spinach, I pick the outer leaves regularly, which encourages more growth from the center. For kale, I also harvest the outer leaves, making sure to leave the central growing point intact. This 'cut and come again' method ensures a continuous yield. By understanding their individual needs and providing a shared environment that caters to both, growing kale and spinach together in a metal planter on my sunny balcony has been incredibly rewarding. It's truly a fantastic way to enjoy fresh greens right outside your door!
