The sleek and goofy Anhinga!

The Anhinga is truly one of the most interesting water birds I’ve encountered. Often mistaken for a water turkey due to its long neck and tail, this bird’s behavior is quite unique. What struck me the most is their habit of spreading their wings wide to dry after swimming underwater. Unlike many aquatic birds, Anhingas lack oils on their feathers, so they get soaked during dives and need the sun and air to dry off. This drying posture, which sometimes looks awkward or goofy, is actually essential for their survival. Living in warm climates across the Americas, Anhingas thrive in freshwater environments like lakes and marshes. I found it fascinating that their name means "devil bird" or "snake bird" in the Tupa language, likely inspired by their slender neck and swift movements in water that resemble a snake. Male and female Anhingas are differently colored. Males typically have dark plumage, while females feature a brown neck, adding to their distinctive appearances. Watching them glide underwater with such grace shows how perfectly adapted they are for hunting fish. Their ability to swim underwater almost as well as they can fly gives them an advantage in catching prey. When observing an Anhinga, it’s impossible not to smile at their quirky wing-drying habit, which is not only practical but also makes them stand out among other water birds. Their presence reminds me how diverse and fascinating bird life can be when you pay close attention to the details in nature.
