Don’t Mix These When Cleaning Fruit ❌

Baking soda and vinegar are both great for cleaning fruit — just not mixed together.

When combined, they neutralize each other and lose their effectiveness.

I use them separately, and after cleaning I noticed a small bug left behind at the bottom 👀

That was enough proof for me.

A simple change that makes a big difference 🥬🍓

... Read moreOkay, so in my original post, I briefly mentioned that baking soda and vinegar are amazing for cleaning fruit, but only if you use them *separately*. I can't stress this enough! After getting so many questions about how I actually do it, I wanted to share my full, step-by-step process that leaves my produce sparkling clean and bug-free. It’s a game-changer for extending the life of your fresh produce, especially delicate berries and grapes. First, let's talk about the Baking Soda Soak – this is my go-to for really tackling dirt, grime, and those pesky pesticides. I grab a large bowl, place my fruits like grapes, blueberries, and even cherries in it. Then, I sprinkle about a tablespoon of baking soda for every 2-3 cups of water I'm going to add. Give it a gentle swirl to dissolve, and let your fruit soak for about 10-15 minutes. You might be surprised by the cloudy water and even some sediment at the bottom – that's proof it's working! I've used this method for everything from sturdy apples to delicate blackberries, and it always removes so much more than just a plain water rinse. It’s surprisingly effective at loosening up anything clinging to the fruit’s surface, including those invisible pesticide residues, making it ideal for cleaning fruits with baking soda. Next up is the Vinegar Rinse. Once the baking soda soak is done, I thoroughly rinse the fruits under cool running water in a colander, making sure all the baking soda solution is gone. Then, I prepare a fresh bowl with a diluted white vinegar solution – usually about one part white vinegar to three or four parts water. This step is fantastic for killing bacteria and inhibiting mold growth, which is crucial if you want to prevent those blueberries with mold close up scenarios. I gently place my fruits, including raspberries and all the other berries, into this solution for a quick soak, usually no more than 1-2 minutes, especially for softer fruits. You'll notice the water might look a little cloudy again, but that's just the vinegar working its magic. This soak is specifically helpful for blueberries soaking in vinegar water and washing fruits with vinegar to ensure a deeper clean. After the vinegar soak, it’s time for another Thorough Rinse. I can't emphasize this enough – you need to rinse your fruit really well under cold running water after the vinegar soak. This ensures no vinegar taste lingers and washes away any remaining microbes. I use a colander and gently agitate the fruit under the tap to make sure every surface gets rinsed. This is the crucial step after rinsing fruit after vinegar soak and rinsing grapes after vinegar soak. Finally, and this is perhaps the most overlooked step for freshness: Drying and Storing. Wet fruit spoils incredibly fast and is a breeding ground for mold. After rinsing, I spread my blackberries and cherries out on clean paper towels to air dry completely. For blueberries and raspberries, I'll often gently roll them on fresh paper towels to absorb as much moisture as possible. Getting them completely dry is key to preventing mold and keeping them fresh longer. If you've ever wondered why your blackberries drying on paper towel is a good idea, it's because it drastically extends their shelf life. Once completely dry, I store them in breathable glass jars or containers, often with a fresh piece of paper towel at the bottom to absorb any residual moisture. This method has truly transformed how long my fresh produce lasts, from grapes to raspberries, keeping them vibrant and delicious!
