... Read moreOkay, so I finally picked up *Zodiac Academy: The Awakening*, the first book in the series that everyone seems to be talking about! After seeing the buzz and that iconic book cover everywhere, I just had to dive in. My initial reaction, as you might have seen from my quick 'Just Read' post and a solid 2/5 star rating, was a bit lukewarm. I know, I know, it's a massively popular series, and believe me, I went in with high hopes, especially after hearing all the talk online about its dark romance and intense fantasy elements. The main reason for my initial rating was that the writing style felt very much like Young Adult, even though I was expecting something more New Adult or even Adult fantasy romance. The characters, especially Tory and Darcy, often displayed a level of immaturity in their reactions and internal monologues that made it challenging for me to fully connect with them. I was really looking forward to the promised 'spice' that the series is famous for, but in *The Awakening*, it was pretty much non-existent. There were hints of tension and some budding relationships, but nothing that truly delivered on the fiery expectations set by the fandom. It felt like the authors were building up to something, but it was a very, very slow burn. Despite my lukewarm review for this first installment, I'm actually quite intrigued by the world-building and the core premise of Zodiac Academy. The idea of a magical academy divided into different Fae houses, with a strong undercurrent of revenge, fated mates, and class struggle, is genuinely fascinating. The plot, while a bit slow to start and occasionally predictable, had enough mystery and intriguing character dynamics to keep me turning the pages. I'm genuinely curious to see how the Vega sisters develop, if the 'mean girl' tropes evolve into something more complex, and how the overarching conflict plays out. Plus, with so many readers absolutely loving this series, I feel like I need to give it a fair shot and see if it truly picks up. I’ve heard countless times that the series gets much better and spicier in later books, and I’m a sucker for committing to a good fantasy saga! If you're considering diving into *Zodiac Academy 1: The Awakening*, be prepared for a definite YA vibe in this first book and a very gradual build-up. Don't expect instant gratification on the spice front, but do go in ready for a unique magical school setting, a journey of sisterhood, and themes of defiance against oppression. I think the potential for an epic fantasy is definitely there, and I'm hopeful that my rating will climb as I continue with the series. It's clearly a book that sparks a lot of discussion and theories across Zodiac Academy online communities, and I can see why people are so passionate about its evolving *Zodiac Academy plot*. This book truly is just the very beginning of a long and intricate story, laying the groundwork for what's to come.
