... Read moreIf you're dreaming of a trip to a Jiangnan water town, let me share my recent discovery: Nanxun Ancient Town! While many famous water towns get all the hype, Nanxun truly stands out, especially since it's the only one connected to a UNESCO World Heritage site (the Grand Canal!). I've visited a few others, but Nanxun has a special charm that felt more authentic and, frankly, less tourist-trap-y. What I loved most about Nanxun was its unique blend of East and West. You walk through these ancient alleys, past traditional gray-tiled roofs, and then suddenly, you're looking at magnificent Western-style villas built by wealthy merchants from centuries ago. It’s a fascinating architectural journey and makes for incredible photos. The town feels sprawling yet intimate; unlike some other water towns where you constantly bump into crowds, Nanxun has enough space to breathe. During my visit, even though it was a peak season (around Chinese New Year, as the article mentioned, with people enjoying tea by the river!), it never felt overwhelming. There were plenty of spots for quiet contemplation and soaking in the atmosphere. Speaking of atmosphere, the local life here is palpable. You see residents going about their day, shopkeepers chatting, and the delicious scent of local snacks wafting from street stalls. And yes, you absolutely must try the famous '臭豆腐' (stinky tofu) – it’s an experience in itself! Don't let the name deter you; it's a staple of Jiangnan cuisine and incredibly flavorful once you get past the initial aroma. I also spotted many vendors selling beautifully woven bamboo crafts, similar to the large sieve with '南浔' characters I saw. It really adds to the cultural immersion. One of the highlights for me was taking a leisurely boat ride along the canals. Gliding under ancient stone bridges, past traditional houses adorned with red lanterns, felt like stepping back in time. It's a fantastic way to appreciate the town's layout and the gentle rhythm of life here. Many of the old residential homes are still inhabited, and you might even stumble upon traditional family courtyards, perhaps even one bearing a plaque like '積善之家' (Jishan Zhijia), signifying a family that accumulates good deeds – a beautiful cultural touch. For those planning a visit, I'd recommend spending at least a full day, if not an overnight stay, to truly soak it all in. The evenings, when the red lanterns cast their warm glow over the water, are magical. Don't rush! Explore the side alleys, pop into local shops, and really engage with the non-heritage cultural experiences that Nanxun offers. The merchants are often original residents, friendly and happy to share stories, which makes the whole experience so much richer. It felt less commercialized than other water towns I've been to, with very reasonable prices, which was a pleasant surprise. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or simply looking for a picturesque escape, Nanxun Ancient Town offers an unforgettable journey into the heart of Jiangnan.
