☕ Are you just selling products... or are you creating a "reason" to make customers want to come back?
Today, Starbucks is one of the coffee brands known to the world, but what sets this brand apart isn't just the coffee flavor or the number of stores.
Howard Schultz sees something even bigger than that.
.
Schultz grew up in a working-class family in Brooklyn.
One day his father was so injured that he couldn't work, the family had almost no collateral, no income reserves, and no system to help care for the working man when trouble struck.
His father's story made him determined that if one day he had his own company, the employees had to be taken care of better than his father had ever received.
That's why Starbucks values welfare and calls its employees "Partners," because Schultz believes that by taking good care of their employees, employees take good care of their customers.
.
In 1983, when Schultz traveled to Italy, he noticed that the coffee shops there were not just places to buy coffee and walk away.
People come in and talk, meet friends, greet baristas, and use cafes as part of their daily lives.
Schultz then redeveloped Starbucks into a third place of life, which is not a home and not a workplace, but a space where people feel comfortable, self-centered and want to come back.
.
The smell of coffee, the atmosphere in the store, the music, the service, the name recognition, and the feeling that they are welcome are reasons for customers to be impressed and back again.
.
However, as Starbucks expanded rapidly, the quality and experience in the store began to decline.
In 2008, Schultz decided to temporarily close more than 7,000 U.S. Starbucks stores for several hours in order for the barista to resume the practice of brewing espresso simultaneously.
That decision cost the company immediate revenue, but he lost short-term sales to maintain the brand's standards in the long run.
For Schultz, what's scarier than losing one day of income is letting customers lose faith and never come back.
.
💡 Important lesson for SMEs Many business owners ask,
"How to Sell More?"
"How to make customers buy more expensive?"
"How to make this month's top grow?"
But Howard Schultz showed us that there is another, more important question.
"How do we create an experience for customers to want to come back even if other stores are cheaper?"
Because a strong brand is not only measured by the number of first-time customers, but by the number of people who choose to come back, even though the outside world has many options. ☕🚀
