The Leak Wasn’t the Roof 😳
This one surprised the homeowner…
The roof was fine.
The gutters weren’t.
When gutters overflow, water can get pushed into nail holes and behind the system causing leaks inside your home.
As a homeowner, I once faced a frustrating situation where I noticed water stains on my ceiling, immediately assuming my roof had sprung a leak. However, upon closer inspection, it turned out the roof was perfectly intact. The real culprit? Clogged gutters overflowing with rainwater. This unexpected discovery taught me how critical regular gutter maintenance is for protecting the inside of your home. When gutters become blocked with leaves or debris, water cannot flow away properly and often spills over the edges. This overflow can seep into small nail holes or gaps behind the gutter system, eventually finding its way into walls and ceilings. Even if your roof shingles are flawless, neglected gutters can lead to significant interior water damage, mold growth, and costly repairs. I highly recommend scheduling gutter cleaning at least twice a year, especially before and after the rainy season. Installing gutter guards can also reduce debris build-up. Paying attention to the condition of downspouts and ensuring water is directed well away from your foundation is another key step. By sharing this experience, I hope to encourage other homeowners not to overlook gutters during their home maintenance routines. If you notice any leaks inside but your roof looks sound, gutters should be your next inspection priority. Preventive care will save you from the stress and expense of major water damage in the future.
