Dunny lane turned garden

I love in when the residents of the older Sydney inner city suburbs reclaim the dunny lanes (night soil lanes) and turn them into gardens. This one is in Darlinghurst.

... Read moreLiving in Sydney’s inner city, I’ve often been inspired by how communities breathe new life into neglected urban spaces. Dunny lanes, originally designed as narrow service lanes for night soil removal, have found a fresh purpose as green havens amid the concrete. In areas like Darlinghurst, residents collaborate to reclaim these lanes by planting native and hardy garden plants suited to the urban environment. What makes these transformed dunny lanes so special is their ability to blend history with nature. They remind us of the city’s past infrastructure while providing much-needed greenery that improves air quality and offers a peaceful retreat. From small vegetable patches to flowering vines climbing brick walls, these gardens contribute to biodiversity and foster a sense of pride among locals. The process often starts with organizing community efforts to clear debris and improve soil conditions. Residents share tools, seedlings, and gardening tips, turning the transformation into a community-building exercise. Moreover, these green alleys become safe, welcoming paths that connect neighborhoods, encourage walking, and reduce urban heat. To anyone considering a similar project, I would recommend checking local regulations and seeking support from council programs aimed at urban greening and heritage preservation. With patience and care, these narrow forgotten spaces can become lively gardens that not only beautify but also sustain vibrant urban ecosystems.
