🎭The Minack Theatre, Cornwall Outdoor Theatre by the Cliffs
🏛️ The history of Minack Theatre is not just architecture or beautiful views, but an example of perseverance, determination and practical action by a woman.
She's not an architect, not a millionaire, but she's digging, pushing, lifting and building everything with a love of the performing arts, and turning a nothing cliff into one of the most beautiful theaters in the world.
Minack Theatre (read Minnack Theatre) is a magical outdoor theatre perched on a steep cliff, by the sea in Porthcurno, Cornwall, South West England - a place not built by a government or a big company, but formed from the dreams and efforts of an ordinary woman, who became a British legend.
👩🦳 The Woman Who Made: Rowena Cade
• Rowena Cade was born 1893 and moved to Cornwall after World War I.
• She bought land on the cliffs near Porthcurno very cheaply and built her own house.
• Over the decades, Rowena slowly built more - from a flat stage into an ancient Greek stone amphitheater.
• Even during World War II, she resumed renovation immediately after the war.
• Until her death in 1983 (age 89), the theatre remained open and highly regarded.
🎭 The beginning of the theater.
• In 1930, she helped a local amateur group, Mousehole Players, perform Shakespeare's The Tempest.
• She offered to perform outdoors in her backyard, which is on a seaside cliff!
• Then she built the stage empty-handed with the help of a worker named Billy Rawlings.
📌 What makes Minack Theatre so special?
• Located on the edge of a steep cliff, full view of the sea and hearing the waves in the background
• There's a curved stage and a stone amphitheater like an ancient Roman theater.
• Capacity is about 750 people, but all seats see the same ocean view.
• Open for day-night performances, including Shakespeare, musicals, concerts, etc.
🕰️ Present
• Only open summer (April-September) because it is outdoor.
• When there is no show, it is an attraction to visit the stage, see the garden, and read Rowena Cade.
• There is a cafe, souvenir shop and a small exhibition on the history of the theatre.
📚 Shakespeare's play is one of the Minack Theatre's "most popular shows." His work has been shown here regularly since the theatre opened, because it is located on a cliff, sees real seas, real light, real winds, all atmospheres perfectly with Shakespeare's material, especially chapters about magic, the sea, dreams, madness, etc.
• Since the first performance in 1932, it has been Shakespeare's The Tempest.
• And after that, Minack Theatre became a popular venue for staging classic Shakespeare plays, e.g.
• Romeo and Juliet
• Macbeth
• A Midsummer Night's Dream
• King Lear
• Twelfth Night
• And so on.
🎭 Minack Theatre is therefore famous as the "outdoor home of Shakespeare by the Sea" of South West England.
William Shakespeare, a 100% true Englishman and considered the greatest poet and playwright in the history of England and the world, died April 23, 1616 (age 52).
📜 wrote 38 plays and more than 150 Sonnets, and his work became a treasure of world literature.
