Lizard Point is the southernmost point of the British Isles. It is in Cornwall. The name "Lizard" is not about reptiles, but is believed to come from the ancient words "Lis" (fortress) + "Ard" (high).

• Very beautiful view - steep cliffs, greenish-black rocks from Serpentine (Serpentine)

• Nautical History - A Danger Point. Shipwrecked many times because of rocks and strong currents.

• Lizard Lighthouse Lighthouse - Built in c.1752 to help navigate ships

• Telecommunications Significance - Nearby is the spot where the 19th century transcontinental submarine telegraph cable was laid (linking Britain to foreign countries).

It is now a tourist attraction, nature walk, bird watching and a beautiful panoramic view of the sea, with a clear day overlooking the Isles of Scilly.

Lizard Point has high cliffs and deep ravines, in many places, especially near the edge of the cliffs, because this is a zirpentine rock, which is quite slippery and brittle when it rains or has island moss.

Combined with the strong winds from the sea, it looks scary and dangerous to get too close.

In the old days, ravines and underwater rocks here broke ships so often that they had to build lighthouses to help them navigate. They now have fences and clear warning signs.
