Tools for a happier life ✨ self-discovery

Came across this book in the library:

📚 The Tools - Phil Stutz and Barry Michels📚

They are both therapists but did not agree with the Sigmund Freud way of therapy and embraced some characteristics of Carl Jung's teachings instead.

See page 2 for the differences! Our modern therapy usually lean towards Freud because most sciences does not agree with the idea of *spirituality* but tbh.. i think nothing is impossible ya know the universe is huge. AND I don't like how Freuds teachings leans towards calling ourselves *broken* and having to *be healed*. I think its useful to use both of their teachings to come up with whatever is useful for you.

The book is a lil bit spiritual with themes of using *higher forces* basically things that are not used in psychology terms, so take what helps and leave what doesn't.

The following is quick pointers of what I took away from the book!

There were alot I will just write 2 that spoke to me most.

---

1. Turn Pain into possibilities

*Being afraid of stepping out your comfort zone*

The Tool: The Reversal of desire

The Higher Force: The force of forward motion

"The comfort zone is supposed to keep your life safe, but what it really does is keep your life small."

The book talks about how stepping into new experiences and possibilities or changes requires you to go through some form of discomfort usually. The reversal of desire can be used when you are going through that discomfort or if there's something you keep avoiding.

STEPS for reversal of desire

1. Choose a situation you keep avoiding

2. Imagine the pain you would feel

3. See the pain as a cloud infront of you

4. Scream silently at the cloud "bring it on!"

5. Feel the pain and scream silently "I love pain."

6. The cloud will then spit you out and close behind you, Say inwardly " Pain sets me free."

This excercise is basically about preparing you for the worst before anything happens so that you can actually do it.

Its call the *force of forward motion* because the excercise wants you to just start doing whatever you find discomfort in, whether its preparing for a game, a speech, a competition, something you fear. Just face the fear first then do it!

The book talk more about the examples but thats the gist of it.

2. The Maze

*Not being able to let go of anger or resentment or unfairness*

The Tool: Unconditional love (Active love)

Active love refers to imagining a huge feeling of love coming from within you, like a bright ball of light amd it slowly encapsulates you. Imagine the person you hate or you are angry at in your mind, your hearts connects and you feel this love encapsulating the both of you and you move through them, taking back your energy and the pieces of yourself that you have left with them. You then leave them behind feeling happier, lighter, peaceful and accepting of the situation. You are surrounded by infinite love.

The higher force: Outflow

Outflow: Its only when you feel something bigger, better and more powerful than fairness, then you would stop waiting for it.

----

There's more to the book but I will write these 2 only~

Do read it to check it out. I think that they highlighted very useful tools for people that are anxious, overthinks alot, been through something, afraid of stepping out your comfort zone or don't really know how to deal with your insecurities.

... Read moreReading 'The Tools' has truly reshaped how I approach challenges in my daily life. What resonated with me the most is the practical nature of the exercises, especially the 'Reversal of Desire' technique. I've often felt stuck when faced with anxiety about stepping outside my comfort zone, whether it's public speaking or trying new experiences. This tool encourages embracing the pain silently and turning it into a driving force rather than a barrier. By visualizing the pain as a cloud and telling it "bring it on," I found myself gradually building resilience and actually feeling empowered rather than trapped. Similarly, the concept of 'Active Love' as a tool to release anger and resentment has been eye-opening. Instead of suppressing difficult feelings towards others or past situations, imagining unconditional love encapsulating both parties allowed me to reclaim my emotional energy. This visualization felt like a peaceful release, helping me move forward without lingering bitterness. What makes these tools exceptional is their integration of spiritual ideas, like "higher forces" and "infinite love," into psychological practice in a way that feels accessible and non-dogmatic. It’s refreshing, especially compared to traditional therapy models that can sometimes feel overly clinical or focused on being "broken." Embracing both Freud’s and Jung’s viewpoints enriches the perspective, reminding us that healing and growth involve both the mind and the soul. I've recommended this book to friends dealing with anxiety, self-doubt, or anyone hesitant to make change. These tools offer not just theory but actionable steps anyone can apply immediately, helping improve mental well-being and personal development. If you're someone who tends to overthink or feels stuck, giving these methods a try could be a transformative experience, helping turn fear and pain into genuine possibilities for growth.
