How we get private event leads at markets:
1. Be ready to talk to everyone. You never know who will be interested in booking you for their event whether it be a wedding, corporate event, shower or birthday party. We’ve found it to be that sometimes the people who look the least likely to ask for more information are the most interested.
2. Know what you offer. When we first started doing markets and were asked about private events I wasn’t sure how to sell what we do and how we can benefit the customer. I now can explain clearly what we do and how we can add value to their event.
3. Provide tangible information. We take print outs of our event packages and pricing sheet to give out to those who are interested. This surprises the customer every time that we have that ready for them. Most questions the customer has can be answered by looking at this sheet. This also gives them something to remember you by when they leave.
4. Gather contact information. If the customer is willing, ask for a phone number or email you can follow up with. Customers will say they’ll reach out and often don’t. Following up leads to more bookings.
From my experience attending markets as a vendor, I’ve learned that success in getting private event leads truly hinges on personal connection and preparation. Being ready to talk to everyone—even those who may not seem like potential clients—opens unexpected doors. Some of the best leads come from casual conversations where you genuinely listen to what the person needs and can then tailor your pitch accordingly. One critical lesson is fully understanding your own offerings. When I first started, I struggled to clearly explain how my products added value to events. Over time, refining this messaging not only made me more confident but also helped customers quickly see why booking with me is a great choice. Having tangible materials like printed event packages and pricing sheets has been a game-changer. These handouts act as memorable takeaways that customers can review later, answering many questions instantly and setting you apart from vendors who rely solely on word of mouth. Another essential step is gathering contact information. While many customers promise to reach out, a gentle follow-up email or call often turns lukewarm interest into confirmed bookings. I make it a habit to ask for an email or phone number right away, making sure to respect their comfort level. This proactive approach demonstrates professionalism and dedication. Moreover, participating in markets targeted at specific events, such as weddings or corporate functions, helps connect with the right audience. Using relevant hashtags like #weddingvendor or #markets on social media can amplify your presence and attract potential clients even before they visit your booth. Overall, consistency and genuine engagement at markets not only generate leads but build lasting client relationships that lead to repeat business and referrals.
