Pretty Kitty Tips (don’t make this weird)

Here’s my Kitty’s Persona:
A sassy spoiled ruler of cuteness and destruction who uses her hired humans because she must attend to her naps and plots for world domination. She’s basically plankton mixed with Garfield. She also enjoys jazz, rain, and string.
Here are tips that have kept my 18 y.o. bby grl meowing:
1. If your kitty is extra furry make sure you brush them otherwise you will find cat hair in the strangest places- and I do mean strange 😳 Get a de-shedding brush based on their coat length, regular soft bristle brush, pet hair scrapper, and a foam shampoo if your kitty doesn’t like water.
2. Play with your kitty to keep them happy and healthy. Jazzie likes jazz, string, and to sleep in the sun. Lasers are actually no good for them so try to avoid those. It also helps to cat proof your home from toxic plants or chemicals as sometimes during play they can get a bit curious.
3. Try to feed your kitty the healthiest food you can afford. Dry food isn’t the best but if you mix it with cuts, broth, or pate it will do just fine. Cuts and dehydrated dry food are great options especially for dental health. Also use wide shallow bowls that have a stand to avoid stress on their whiskers.
4. Make sure you stay on top of vet visits! 🩺
They generally don’t enjoy them but there are ways to make it less dramatic like playing with them and giving them treats in their carrier. Grooming them also helps which leads me to my last tip…
5. Trim your kitty’s nails and give them treats when they let you do it after. It helps too if you touch or rub their paws and try it when they are in a calmer state.

Beyond the basic tips I shared, I've picked up a few more nuggets of wisdom that I think every cat parent, whether you have a fluffy Ragdoll or a sleek Sphynx, will find super helpful! When it comes to grooming, especially for our longer-haired 'Real House Cats' like Jazzie (who sometimes thinks she's a 'Cupcake Princess Pookie' with all her fluff!), dealing with shedding and mats is a constant battle. I've found that a good deshedding tool, like a Furminator, used regularly (once or twice a week, depending on the season) can dramatically reduce the amount of hair you find on your couch – and in your breakfast! For those trickier tangles, a wide-toothed comb followed by a finer one works wonders. And remember, grooming isn't just about looks; it's a fantastic bonding experience and helps stimulate their skin and circulation, keeping their coat healthy from the inside out. Playtime is another area where I've really learned to up my game. While lasers are a no-go for me now (that frustrated hunt for a dot is just not fair!), I've invested in a variety of interactive toys. Wand toys with feathers or ribbons are always a hit, mimicking natural prey. I also rotate toys to keep things exciting and prevent boredom. Cat trees and vertical spaces are non-negotiable in my house; they give Jazzie her own kingdom to survey and satisfy her climbing instincts. Engaging their minds with puzzle feeders can also be a game-changer, turning mealtime into a fun challenge and preventing them from eating too fast. Nutrition is so crucial, and I'm always looking for ways to boost Jazzie's health. You mentioned mixing dry food with wet, which is brilliant! I've also started adding a little fish oil supplement (vet-approved, of course!) to her food a few times a week for extra skin and coat health – it really makes her fur shine. And water intake is key! Many cats don't drink enough, so I got a ceramic cat fountain, which encourages her to drink more fresh, flowing water. It's made a noticeable difference! Finally, beyond just routine vet visits, it’s important to be observant of subtle changes in your cat's behavior. Our cats are masters at hiding discomfort, so things like a slight change in appetite, litter box habits, or activity levels can be early signs of an issue. Don't hesitate to call your vet if something seems off – early detection can make all the difference. And yes, 'kitty' definitely means our adorable feline companions! We just want them to be as happy and healthy as possible, living their best 'Real House Cat' lives.
