Every day is so different.
Some days I sit at my desk ALL day in my PJs and chase all the words. Other days I have to multitask Bahaha. #tlsmith #writertok
Being a full-time writer involves much more than just sitting down to write. From my personal experience, some days can be all about hitting high word counts—sometimes reaching over 5,000 words—which requires a focused and disciplined mindset. Starting early, around 7 a.m., helps set a productive rhythm for the day. However, writing days are rarely uniform. Between writing sprints, I often find myself multitasking: cleaning my office, organizing book deliveries, or preparing stock to send to independent bookstores. Managing these responsibilities alongside writing means learning how to switch tasks effectively without losing momentum. Taking breaks is equally important. A mid-morning brunch or a quick dessert break around 4 p.m. refreshes my mind and keeps creativity flowing. This balance of work and rest is crucial, especially when you’re handling fragile packages of books or coordinating shipments, which adds a hands-on element to what might otherwise feel like a solitary job. For writers trying to create a sustainable daily routine, I recommend tracking your word counts and recognizing what constitutes a ‘small’ or ‘good’ writing day. Also, engaging with local bookstores and indie shops can add excitement and connection to your writing journey, making the process more rewarding. Ultimately, embracing the unpredictability of each day—whether it involves writing in pajamas or managing logistics—helps maintain motivation and creativity. Every day is different, and that variety keeps the craft interesting and fulfilling.
