Dahlias grow and bloom all spring, summer and fall! These are fantastic flowers for all season long color. They will be missed as winter slowly takes them away.
Get ducks! They eat the bugs and beg for treats 🤣🍓
When I first started my garden, I dreamed of vibrant colors lasting all season. That's when I discovered the magic of dahlias! These incredible flowers truly live up to their reputation, blooming from spring right through to the first frosts of fall. There’s nothing quite like seeing a magnificent white and yellow dahlia flower unfurl its petals, adding an instant burst of joy to my raised beds. Many people think dahlias are tricky, but I’ve found them surprisingly rewarding. The key is good soil, plenty of sun, and consistent watering. I love experimenting with different varieties to ensure a continuous display. As the season winds down, it’s a bit sad to see them go, but lifting those tubers for winter storage is like tucking away little promises of next year's beauty. Now, let's talk about my other garden stars: my delightful group of domestic ducks! Bringing ducks into our backyard has been one of the best decisions for our little 'Harty's duck farm and garden.' Not only are they endlessly entertaining with their waddles and quacks, but they're also incredibly effective garden helpers. My biggest gardening challenge used to be slugs and snails, but ever since my ducks joined the team, those pests are practically non-existent! They tirelessly patrol the garden, gobbling up all sorts of unwanted insects and larvae without damaging my precious plants – unlike chickens, which can be a bit too enthusiastic. It’s amazing to watch them forage, turning garden nuisances into delicious snacks. They truly do beg for treats, especially juicy strawberries from our patch – it’s the cutest thing! Providing them with a safe, clean space, like a small coop and a dedicated area, perhaps near a gravel path where they can waddle and splash, is essential. They need fresh water for drinking and bathing every day, and a good quality waterfowl feed to supplement their foraging. The eggs are a bonus too – rich and delicious! Having both dahlias and ducks creates such a harmonious and productive environment. It’s more than just a garden; it’s a vibrant ecosystem where beauty and practicality go hand-in-hand. If you’re looking to add color, life, and natural pest control to your outdoor space, I highly recommend exploring the world of dahlias and getting a few feathered friends. It’s truly a joy to watch them thrive together!
