My love affair with Oaxaca began the moment I stepped into its colorful streets. Beyond the grandeur of the Santo Domingo cultural complex, which beautifully houses the museum with its stunning pre-Hispanic artifacts and colonial art, you simply must wander through the adjacent Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca. This botanical garden is a work of art in itself, showcasing the diverse flora of the region in a beautifully curated space. I spent hours here, mesmerized by the ancient cacti and unique plant life. It’s also known for being an incredibly picturesque spot, often chosen for special events, and walking through it, you can easily imagine why it would be such a sought-after backdrop for celebrations. It’s a truly unique Oaxacan attraction that blends nature with culture seamlessly. No visit to Oaxaca City would be complete without a trip to the ancient Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán. Just a short drive from the city center, these archaeological wonders offer breathtaking panoramic views and a profound sense of history. Exploring the pyramids, plazas, and ball court, I felt transported back in time, understanding why these sights are considered some of Oaxaca's top attractions. It’s an essential part of understanding what Oaxaca is famous for – its deep indigenous roots and powerful pre-Columbian legacy. Back in the city, the bustling markets are another highlight.
