On my night shift
🌼I work in a busy ER so having something thats filling and light is the way to go. I like to eat when it slows down so here I am at 0500 just now eating my dinner. I do pack snacks that I can munch on in between patients like protein bars, yogurt pretzels, or popcorn. By the way is anyone else in a kale crunch salad chokehold or is it just me?
🌙⭐️To all my night shift girlies, what are some of your favorite go to’s when working long hours? #nursedinner #rnlife #shareyourthoughts #nurselifestyle #
Okay, fellow night shift warriors, let's talk real talk about fueling our bodies when the world is asleep! It's so easy to grab whatever's convenient, but I've learned that having a game plan makes all the difference in feeling good and staying sharp. My Chick-fil-A Kale Crunch Salad is a staple for a reason – it's surprisingly filling without making me feel sluggish. The mix of greens, crunchy toppings, and a light dressing hits the spot perfectly when I finally get a moment to eat around 0500. If you don't have a Chick-fil-A nearby, try making your own at home with chopped kale, cabbage, roasted almonds, and a creamy poppyseed dressing. It’s a total game-changer for a healthy night shift meal! Beyond that main meal, snacks are my lifesavers between patients. Protein is key for sustained energy, so I always have some protein bars on hand. I look for ones with minimal added sugar and at least 10-15g of protein to keep me feeling full. And speaking of quick bites, those Trader Joe's Meyer Lemon & Cream Yogurts? Absolutely delicious and a great source of calcium and probiotics. If you're not a fan of yogurt, cheese sticks or a handful of almonds are equally good protein-packed options. Now, for the big one: popcorn! I know many of us crave something savory and crunchy. For night shifts, portion control is everything. I love brands like SkinnyPop or Smartfood Mini bags – they're pre-portioned, so you don't accidentally devour a whole family-sized bag (we've all been there!). Air-popped popcorn with a little nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor is another fantastic healthy option that won't weigh you down. It’s crucial to find snacks that fit into those short breaks without causing a sugar crash later. Hydration is another non-negotiable. While I sometimes grab a 'Juicy Energy' drink for a pick-me-up, I try to balance it with plenty of water. Herbal teas can also be really soothing during those quiet (or not-so-quiet!) hours. What else do I stash in my bag? Fresh fruit like apples or bananas are quick, no-mess options. Baby carrots and bell pepper strips with a small container of hummus are perfect for a crunchy, vitamin-packed boost. Hard-boiled eggs are another protein powerhouse you can prep ahead. For those who like something a bit more substantial but still easy, overnight oats made with almond milk and berries can be a fantastic, pre-made breakfast for when your shift ends, or a satisfying "meal" during a longer break. My biggest tip? Plan ahead! Spend a little time on your days off to chop veggies, portion out snacks, and even assemble a simple salad. It makes it so much easier to make healthy choices when you’re tired and time-crunched. Remember, what we eat directly impacts our energy levels and focus, so treating our bodies right during these challenging shifts is super important.
