✅ 7/10 ~ This is the Take The Day Off Cleansing Mousse from Clinique. I HATED this for my face - but I LOVED using it to clean my makeup brushes and sponges! It did clean my skin, but it burned my eyes so bad when I used it to clean off my eye makeup. It did make my skin feel a little tight after using it, but it did not break me out. First photo is mine and it looks wonky because of the product has plastic packaging like this I almost always cut it open to get all the product out. This cleaned my makeup brushes better than any I’ve ever used! I usually clean my makeup sponges and brushes with facial cleansers I ended up not likening for my face because it does a great job of getting all the makeup off. This works so well it literally got rid of the makeup stained on my brushes / sponges. I would buy this again just to clean them (it’s just too expensive to buy on a regular basis just to clean brushes) but not to clean my face.

First off, the packaging is that familiar soft-squeeze purple tube – practical, but as I mentioned, I always end up cutting open these plastic tubes to get every last drop! When you first pump it out, it's a light, airy mousse, not too dense, with a very subtle, almost non-existent scent, which I usually appreciate in skincare. It feels gentle to the touch right away.
Now, for using it on my face. The mousse texture is lovely at first, creating a soft, cushiony lather. It spreads easily, and initially, it feels like it's doing a good job of lifting makeup. However, the sensory experience quickly took a turn for me. As soon as it got near my eyes – even if I was trying to be careful – a strong stinging sensation kicked in. It wasn't just a mild tingle; it genuinely burned my eyes, making them water and blurring my vision. This was a huge red flag for a product designed to 'take the day off,' which often implies removing eye makeup. After rinsing, my skin didn't feel supple or hydrated. Instead, there was a distinct feeling of tightness, almost a 'squeaky clean' sensation that, for my skin type, usually signals that a cleanser has been a bit too stripping. It didn't leave any residue, which is a plus, but the overall sensory feedback for facial cleansing was quite negative – irritating eyes and a tight, uncomfortable after-feel.
But here’s where the texture and cleansing power truly shone, in an unexpected way! For cleaning makeup brushes and sponges, this mousse was a revelation. I'd typically use other facial cleansers I didn't like for my face, but this Clinique mousse took it to another level. When I squeezed some onto a damp brush, it immediately created a rich, dense lather that really clung to the bristles. As I worked it in, I could visibly see makeup pigments just melting away. The texture of the mousse, combined with its strong cleansing agents (which were too much for my eyes), proved incredibly effective at breaking down stubborn foundation, concealer, and even deeply stained eyeshadows. My sponges, which often hold onto foundation residue no matter how much I scrub, came out looking pristine – almost like new. It felt incredibly satisfying to see them get so clean. The rinse-off was easy, and the brushes felt thoroughly clean and soft afterwards, without any strange residue. It truly transformed the chore of brush cleaning into something surprisingly efficient and effective, all thanks to how its texture and formula interacted with the makeup on the tools.
So, while the texture and sensory performance for my delicate facial skin (especially around the eyes) was a definite miss due to the burning and tightness, its performance as a deep-cleaning agent for tools, with its rich lather and effective breakdown of makeup, was outstanding. It’s a classic case of a product's texture and sensory impact being completely different depending on its application. The initial soft mousse gives way to an irritating sensation on the face, but transforms into a powerful, satisfying lather when battling makeup on brushes. Definitely a unique texture journey!
Omg I love this hack! Using facial cleansers for makeup brushes is genius. ✨
