It’s so true what I mentioned in my last post – the mental toll of renovation is no joke! It's an emotional rollercoaster, and I really wish someone had given me a heads-up beforehand. Beyond the dust and decisions, there's a constant underlying stress, decision fatigue, and the feeling that your home, your sanctuary, is perpetually in chaos. We’ve definitely learned a few things about managing the stress that comes with renovating a home, and I wanted to share some of our personal coping mechanisms that might help you too. First, setting realistic expectations is crucial. We started with what we thought was a solid timeline and budget, but quickly realized that renovation projects rarely go according to plan. There are always unexpected issues – a structural surprise behind a wall, a delivery delay, or a contractor's schedule shift. Embracing flexibility and building in buffer time (and a contingency fund!) has been a lifesaver for our sanity. Instead of getting frustrated by every setback, we've tried to view them as part of the process. Another huge thing is creating a 'safe zone' within your home, if possible. For us, even just having our master bedroom floor laid has made a world of difference. It gives us one space that feels somewhat finished and put-together, a place to escape the ongoing mess and work. If you can dedicate even one room, or even just a corner, to remain untouched and tidy, it can do wonders for your mental well-being. Communication with your partner or family is also key. My husband and I have had to be very open about how we're feeling, whether it's overwhelmed, exhausted, or excited about a new phase. Sharing the load, even if it's just venting to each other, helps prevent feelings of isolation. We also make sure to celebrate every small win – getting those cabinets taped, hanging drywall, or putting together a new desk might seem minor in the grand scheme, but each completed task is a step closer to our dream foreverhome. Finally, don't forget self-care. It's easy to get consumed by the project, but taking breaks, doing something you enjoy, or simply getting out of the house for a bit can recharge your batteries. For us, it’s been about finding moments of calm amidst the chaos. Slowlybutsurely, we are getting there, and learning so much about ourselves and our home along the way.
