Creating a Minecraft Roguelike game has been a challenging but rewarding experience for me. In this third part of my series, I reflect on the moments that made my roguelike finally work as intended. One of the biggest hurdles was balancing procedural generation with gameplay mechanics. Minecraft’s blocky world offers a unique canvas, but designing a roguelike that feels fresh with every playthrough required carefully tuning the random elements. I found that clearly defining the dungeon layouts and controlling the enemy spawn rates helped keep the experience exciting without being unfair. Another key aspect was integrating the game’s combat system. Roguelikes demand strategic combat, and adapting this into Minecraft’s existing mechanics meant experimenting with custom mobs and special abilities. Through trial and error, I added features that made each encounter meaningful while retaining the charm of Minecraft’s environment. I also improved the user interface based on feedback from early testers. Providing clear information on player stats, inventory, and game objectives transformed the play experience, making it accessible to both new players and roguelike veterans. Overall, the journey of making my Minecraft Roguelike WORKS! has taught me the importance of patience, iteration, and community engagement.
