Matthew 6:39 NIV going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed. my father, if it is possible, "may this cup be taken from me. yet not as I will, but as you will. " when Jesus prayed made this cup be taken from me not as I will but I do will Jesus was wanting it to be over but he knew that the father sent him to do exactly what he was doing by Saving us sinners Jesus could have come down from that cross but he didn't he could have said no I'm not doing this all of you will just go back to your sin but he didn't, Jesus stayed up on that cross because he knew that we needed a savior he knew that without him we are nothing but with Jesus we can do anything as long as Jesus is with us and he knew that and that is why he stayed on the cross.

2025/11/15 Edited to

... Read moreThe passage in Matthew 26:39 NIV, where Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane, consistently moves me. It's not just a historical account; it's a glimpse into the raw, human side of our Savior, grappling with an unimaginable future, yet ultimately submitting to divine will. When I read 'My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will,' I feel the profound weight of His impending sacrifice. What exactly was this 'cup' Jesus wanted to be taken from Him? It wasn't merely the physical pain of the cross, but the terrifying prospect of bearing the sins of the world, of being separated from God the Father. This was spiritual agony beyond comprehension. It shows us that even Jesus, in His humanity, wrestled with the path ahead, experiencing fear and distress just like we do in our darkest moments. But then comes the ultimate act of surrender: 'Yet not as I will, but as you will.' This phrase is a cornerstone of faith. It teaches us that true strength isn't found in avoiding suffering, but in aligning our will with God's, even when His path seems agonizing. It’s a powerful lesson for our own lives when we face difficult decisions or trials. How many times have I prayed for a different outcome, only to realize that God's plan, though challenging, was ultimately better? This deep trust in God's plan reminds me of Psalms 119:18 NIV: 'Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.' Just as Jesus fully understood and embraced the Father's 'law' or will for Him, we too can pray for spiritual insight. When we ask God to open our eyes, we're asking to see beyond our limited perspective, to understand His greater purpose even in hardship. It's about recognizing the 'wonderful things' that can emerge from situations we'd rather avoid, knowing that He is working all things for good. When I'm going through a tough time, and my own desires clash with what I sense God might be leading me to, I often return to Matthew 26:39. Jesus' example isn't about passively accepting fate; it's about actively choosing faith and obedience in the face of immense personal cost. It encourages me to push through my own discomfort, knowing that His example of perfect surrender paved the way for our salvation. His prayer wasn't a request to escape duty, but a powerful affirmation of His unwavering commitment to complete the mission He was sent to accomplish. So, when we meditate on Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane, we're not just observing a historical event. We're witnessing the heart of our Lord, full of both human struggle and divine resolve. It’s a call for us to examine our own prayers, to ask ourselves if we are truly willing to say, 'not as I will, but as you will,' trusting that the Father knows best, just as Jesus did. This profound moment truly empowers us to face our own 'cups' with faith, knowing His strength is available.
