Eldritch by Keri Lake Review 🐦⬛
Now THIS is how you tear your characters apart just to build them back up stronger. Keri Lake does dark gothic romance like no other, not to mention she has some of the best dual POVs in her books. Book one was fantastic but I was worried in the end that them being fated mates would come off as too tropey. I was pleasantly surprised with how she twisted an over used storyline and made it completely unique to the world and the character’s story and development.
This book was HEAVY. Absolutely read the trigger warnings because Zevander’s trauma is deep, but I loved how carefully written his story was. A trauma like his cannot be untangled and I like that she thought through Zevander as a character so well.
I also appreciated how much time she gave the characters to grow through their pain before jumping into a relationship, it made it so much more satisfying when they finally took that next step.
The world was rich and haunting and the plot was well done.
My main critique is that it was very flashback heavy. It could’ve done without so many. Also the ending was a little rushed. The characters were so thought out that the plot itself seemed weak in comparison in my opinion. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that this book is fantastic and the series as a whole is one I’ll forever recommend.

Alright, fellow bookworms, let's talk more about 'Eldritch by Keri Lake' because there's so much to unpack beyond just the plot! One of the first things that drew me in, and I know many of you too, is that absolutely stunning cover. Seriously, have you seen it? The way the dark, gothic imagery sets the tone immediately is just brilliant. The two gothic characters superimposed on the cover really hint at the intense, intertwining fates within the pages. It's not just a cover; it's a promise of the haunting beauty and deep emotional journey you're about to embark on. My tablet literally looked like a portal to another world with that cover displayed! Now, about the 'eldritch' aspect. While this isn't your typical cosmic horror, Keri Lake masterfully injects a sense of ancient, almost otherworldly ominousness into her dark gothic romance. It’s less about tentacles and more about the deeply ingrained, seemingly inescapable trauma and destinies that feel larger than life. The world-building feels rich, ancient, and truly haunting, which is exactly what ties into that 'the gothic and the eldritch' vibe many readers are looking for. It adds a layer of depth and gravitas that elevates it beyond a simple love story. Speaking of love stories, let's dive deeper into the characters, especially Zevander. As the original review mentioned, his trauma is profound and meticulously handled. What makes him such a compelling character – dare I say, a 'God Tier Book BF' – is how realistically complex he is. Keri Lake doesn't shy away from showcasing his pain and the long, arduous journey to healing. You really feel his struggle, and that authenticity makes his eventual growth and connection with his fated mate incredibly satisfying. It's not insta-love; it's a hard-won emotional intimacy forged through fire. The dual POVs truly shine here, giving us access to both protagonists' innermost thoughts and struggles, making their path to romance even more impactful. And for those of you wondering about the 'spicy chapters' in Eldritch? While the book is very much focused on emotional depth and character development, Keri Lake definitely understands how to build intense romantic tension. The intimacy, when it happens, feels earned and deeply connected to the characters' emotional arcs. It’s not just thrown in; it serves the story and highlights the deepening bond between the characters. It's a dark romance, so expect passion that's as complex and intense as the characters themselves. If you're new to Keri Lake's books, 'Eldritch' is a fantastic starting point to experience her unique blend of dark romance, intricate character psychology, and atmospheric world-building. She consistently delivers stories where characters are truly put through the emotional wringer, only to emerge stronger, and their relationships are all the more powerful for it. This series, and particularly this book, proves why she's a master of the genre, creating stories that linger long after you've turned the final page.
