Let go of my dream? I’m confused
Is this a sign to give up or push harder?
I’m really at a crossroads right now. Two years ago, I completed all my pre-reqs. After a lot of hesitation and life getting in the way, I finally decided to go all in and pursue nursing school. I failed the entry exam twice… but I didn’t give up. I passed on my third try. Just when I thought things were falling into place, I found out there were no spots left in the program.
I stayed hopeful and finally got close to enrolling. But then—another blow. The first college I ever attended, Paine College, where I need to get my transcripts from, was hit by a cyberattack over spring break. That was over a month ago, and I still haven’t received my transcripts. I’ve contacted multiple departments, filed complaints, and asked if there’s any alternative way to get what I need—but I’ve been met with silence or no solutions.
To make things even heavier, I lost my mother to cancer on April 23. That alone has shaken my world. I missed the May 5th start date for school—not just because of the transcripts but because I’ve been grieving and trying to hold myself together through it all.
Now I’m sitting here wondering: Is this the universe telling me to stop, to let go of this dream? Or is it a test of how badly I want it—to push harder, stay focused, and wait for the September start date?
I really don’t know what to do. I’m just being honest. I’ve tried. I’ve fought. But I’m tired. And yet, something in me still believes there’s more to come.
If you’ve ever been here—confused, discouraged, but still holding onto hope—please let me know. I could use some clarity right now.

Experiencing uncertainty while chasing your dreams is common, especially in high-pressure fields like healthcare. Many prospective nursing students encounter obstacles, from failing entrance exams to dealing with administrative setbacks, such as the recent cyberattack on Paine College. The emotional weight of personal loss, like the death of a loved one, can further complicate the journey to enrollment. It's crucial to remember that resilience is often tested in challenging times. Consider exploring options like online classes, alternative entry programs, or support groups for nursing aspirants. The nursing field particularly values determination and compassion, qualities that often emerge stronger through adversity. Sharing your story on platforms like Lemon8 can foster a sense of community and provide shared insights. Others may relate to your struggles with grief and educational hurdles, offering their encouragement and advice. As you reflect on whether waiting for the next school term or pursuing a different path feels right, keep in mind that each individual's journey is unique. You are not alone in this experience, and reaching out for support can be the first step toward finding clarity. Encourage open discussions about the challenges of nursing education, which can help demystify the process and highlight the myriad paths others have taken to achieve their goals in the healthcare profession.
