“It could be worse,” is NOT comfort.

Telling people to “be grateful because it could be worse” is not comforting.

It’s minimizing.

And yes… it’s shaming.

I don’t play the Suffering Olympics. There are no medals. No podiums. No winners.

Pain is not a competition.

When someone says, “Others have it worse,”what they’re really saying is, “Your pain makes me uncomfortable, so please silence it.”

That’s not empathy. That’s emotional avoidance.

If someone’s pain makes us reach for comparison, it’s not their pain that needs correcting.

And let’s talk about comparisons for a second because they’re almost always flawed.

Someone might say, “Well, at least you have a supportive husband.”

Okay.

But someone else might have a deeply supportive mother or best friend….and no partner.

So tell me…who has it worse?

You can’t measure loss with a ruler. Support systems aren’t interchangeable parts. Grief, illness, loneliness, and trauma are subjective experiences, not math problems.

Gratitude does not require silence. Prayer does not require comparison. And acknowledging someone else’s pain does not diminish yours.

You can be grateful and hurting. Faithful and honest. Strong and exhausted.

When we rank suffering, we don’t create perspective…we create shame. And shame does not heal people. It isolates them.

So no, I won’t “just be grateful” to make others more comfortable. And I won’t compare pain like its currency.

We don’t heal people by telling them to be quieter about their pain. We heal by listening without measuring, fixing, or ranking.

That’s what compassion actually looks like.

... Read moreIn my experience, hearing someone say, “It could be worse,” when I share my struggles has often left me feeling dismissed rather than comforted. This phrase, while intended to offer perspective, usually comes across as minimizing and invalidating the very real emotions involved. When we go through chronic illness, grief, or any form of hardship, each person’s experience is unique and deeply personal. I've found that pain isn’t a competition but a personal journey. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison to try to make sense of suffering—wondering if my situation is better or worse than someone else’s. But this doesn’t help; it only creates feelings of isolation because no one’s pain can be objectively measured or ranked. A supportive partner might be a blessing for one, while a close friend or family member might be another’s greatest support. This variation makes comparisons flawed and often hurtful. True empathy, I’ve learned, means sitting with someone’s pain without trying to fix it or silence it. When people tell us to “just be grateful,” it can feel more like a command to hide our feelings than an encouragement to find gratitude. But being grateful and hurting are not mutually exclusive. Faith, honesty, strength, and exhaustion can coexist. What really helps is compassionate listening—without judgment or measurement. When I’ve experienced this kind of support, it has been transformative in my healing process. It’s about acknowledging that everyone’s pain is valid and worthy of attention. The takeaway for me is that comfort comes not from comparison or telling someone their pain should be quieter. Instead, it’s about creating space where feelings are honored, and empathy is genuine. This mindset fosters true connection and healing, rather than shame or avoidance. So let’s strive to listen without ranking suffering, because that’s what real compassion looks like.

Life could be worse. But it could be better too.
There’s a quiet ache that comes with being in-between — not in crisis, but not fulfilled either. You’re managing. You’re functioning. You’re grateful. But deep down, you know you’re meant for more. That doesn’t make you ungrateful. It makes you aware. It makes you ready. It makes you brave
