... Read moreHey everyone! Summer is officially here, and what better way to beat the heat than with a glass of perfectly fresh watermelon juice? I absolutely love making my own at home. It’s not just incredibly hydrating and delicious, but it's also packed with essential vitamins like A and C, and a good dose of antioxidants like lycopene – a much healthier and more natural alternative to sugary sodas or store-bought juices with additives. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to cool down after a workout or just as a refreshing treat on a lazy afternoon.
I always get asked how I make mine so vibrant and tasty, so I wanted to share my super simple method with you all. First, picking the right watermelon is crucial! Look for one that's dark green, has a dull rather than shiny skin, and ideally, a creamy yellow patch on the bottom where it sat on the ground. This yellow spot, often called the 'field spot,' indicates it ripened on the vine. Give it a good thump – it should sound hollow, which usually means it's ripe and full of juice.
Once you have your perfect melon, cut it open and remove the rind. You don't necessarily need to meticulously remove every single seed if you have a powerful blender or a juicer, as they’ll be strained out anyway. I just toss the chunks into my blender. There’s no need to add any extra water, as watermelon is already over 90% water! Blend until it's completely liquid and smooth.
Now, here's my little secret for achieving that beautiful, smooth, vibrant, reddish-pink juice: I always strain it through a fine-mesh sieve. This step is essential for removing any fibrous pulp or remaining seeds, giving you that lovely, clear juice consistency. However, don't worry if you see a little bit of foam or pulp at the top; that's perfectly normal and often indicates just how fresh it is! Sometimes, I even leave a bit of that natural foam for a more rustic, homemade feel – it's really a matter of personal preference!
After straining, I immediately pour my fresh juice into glass jars. This is a game-changer for me! Not only do they look so much prettier and more appealing in the fridge, but glass also helps to keep the juice colder for longer compared to plastic, and it certainly doesn’t impart any strange flavors. I love using glass jars sealed with a silver lid – they look incredibly chic and are perfect for grab-and-go when I'm heading out. I typically make a big batch that fills about four glass jars, ensuring I have a supply of refreshing juice ready for a few days without needing to make it daily.
For an extra refreshing kick, I sometimes add a squeeze of fresh lime juice or a few mint leaves to each jar before sealing them up. You can even experiment with a thin slice of ginger for a subtle spice, or a splash of sparkling water for a fizzy, celebratory treat.
Making your own fresh watermelon juice is such an easy, fun, and rewarding way to enjoy a healthy, natural drink throughout the warmer months. It's become my current summer obsession, and I hope it becomes yours too! Stay cool, hydrated, and enjoy every sip!
