Would you go in??
This was the coolest thing I have ever done!! It’s not everyday that you get to swim into a cave that was used as a Mayan ceremonial cave including human sacrifice.
Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) was a full on Indiana Jones adventure. You start by crossing the river 3 times. Then you have to swim into the cave where it’s 20 feet deep. The beginning of the cave you are in water sometimes deep enough you have to swim and sometimes just your feet our wet. You have to climb up and over many rocks and make your way through some tight spaces about 3/4 mile in. After that, you get to a giant boulder that you have to climb up and then jump into the dry chamber.
Once in the dry chamber, you take your shoes off and walk in just socks for another 1/2 mile or so before you enter the last chamber. Along the way, you will see lots of Mayan artifacts especially clay pots that were used in sacrifices. The further you go, the more drastic the sacrifices got. In the last chamber there are multiple bones and skulls , along with some random fingers and even a full skeleton.
It was fascinating, sometimes scary and definitely exhilarating! If you ever go to Belize I highly recommend.
The biggest tip for this adventure is to hire your own guide. There are only 60 certified guides allowed to go in. Ours was amazing and took us to see an extra skeleton that many people do not get to see. He also recommended that we get up early and be there when it opened. This was a game changer! We were by ourselves most of the time in the cave and while we were coming out lots of people were going in.
No pictures are allowed but our guide did share some stock photos with us.
📍 Belize
After my incredible journey through the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave in Belize, I can honestly say it was unlike anything I've ever experienced! If you're considering this epic adventure, here are some extra tips and insights I wish I'd known, beyond just getting an early start. Firstly, let's talk preparation. You absolutely need sturdy, closed-toe shoes that can get wet and offer good grip for scrambling over those large rock formations. I wore my trusty water shoes, and they were perfect. Forget fancy swimwear; quick-drying clothes are essential because you'll be wading through clear blue waters, swimming sections, and even crossing rivers multiple times before you even reach the cave entrance. Don't worry about carrying a big backpack; most tour operators provide dry bags for essentials if needed. Remember, no cameras are allowed inside, which actually forced me to truly live in the moment and soak it all in – a blessing in disguise! The physical demands are real, but totally manageable for most active individuals. You’ll be swimming, climbing, and navigating tight spaces. The feeling of pushing yourself, headlamp illuminating the path, surrounded by ancient stalactites and geological wonders, is truly exhilarating. It’s not just a walk; it's a full-body adventure. The adventurers with headlamps navigating the clear blue waters are a perfect depiction of the experience – that's what you become! What truly sets ATM apart for me is its profound historical significance. Seeing the Mayan ceremonial site firsthand, with artifacts like ancient pottery and the actual skeletal remains from human sacrifices, was incredibly powerful. Our guide shared so many fascinating details about the rituals performed here, making the experience deeply moving and educational. It's not just a beautiful cave with intricate rock formations; it's a sacred archaeological site frozen in time. I learned about the "Crystal Maiden," a fully calcified skeleton, even though I didn't get to see all of her clearly. Finally, I can't stress enough the importance of your guide. Ours was a certified expert, crucial for safety and for unlocking the cave's secrets. They know the safest routes through the water and the dry chambers, and they bring the history to life. They also make sure you respect the sacred environment. My biggest takeaway? This isn't just a tourist attraction; it's a journey into the heart of Mayan history, a thrilling physical challenge, and an unforgettable immersion in nature's raw beauty and ancient mysteries. You'll leave feeling utterly transformed and with stories to tell for a lifetime!
