🌱 Container Gardening Update 🌱

I’m officially kicking off my garden season, and this month I’m starting my cabbage indoors in planters. 🥬

I’m beginning with indoor seed starting, then gradually transitioning everything outdoors once the weather and soil temperatures are right. Since I’m container gardening, this allows me to better control soil quality, drainage, and watering—especially important early in the season.

I’ll be using a nutrient-rich potting mix and incorporating natural composting methods, including banana peels and orange peels (properly composted and buried deep in containers) to help support healthy growth.

Gardening doesn’t require a large yard—just the right planters, patience, and consistency. I’m excited to watch these seedlings grow and to share progress, tips, and lessons learned along the way.

🌿 If you’re starting a garden this year—whether indoors, outdoors, or in containers—you’re not alone. Start small and grow with confidence.

... Read moreStarting a container garden indoors has been a game changer for me, especially with cooler spring temperatures. Using seed trays and small pots gives me control over moisture levels—it's crucial to keep the soil moist but not soggy to avoid fungal issues. I recommend using a seed starting mix instead of regular potting soil because it’s lighter and drains better, which young seedlings appreciate. Lighting is another key factor; placing seedlings under a grow light for 12-16 hours daily helps mimic natural sunlight and encourages strong stems. Rotating trays helps seedlings grow evenly and prevents leaning toward one side. When it comes to composting in containers, integrating chopped banana and orange peels offers natural nutrients and boosts soil health. Just make sure to bury them deeply to avoid attracting pests. I learned to harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting, which minimizes transplant shock. For watering, early mornings are ideal to reduce evaporation and allow leaves to dry, preventing disease. Checking soil moisture 1-2 inches down helps ensure roots stay hydrated without overwatering. If you’re container gardening, always pick planters with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Mulching post-transplant helps retain moisture and keeps soil temperature stable. Finally, patience and consistency are key—gardening doesn’t require a large yard, just the right setup and care routine. Watching those first cabbage leaves emerge indoors is so rewarding and motivates me to keep expanding my container garden throughout the season.
