As she mentions, "No matter how much you think you know about dementia, nothing prepares you for the painfully slow disappearing of your loved one," reflecting the difficult reality many face when caring for or grieving a family member with dementia. Through my own experience with a family member who battled dementia, I learned the importance of patience and cherishing every moment. The gradual loss of recognition and communication can be heartbreaking, but it also highlights the incredible strength of love and memory that persists despite the illness. Gabrielle’s tribute reminds us that grief is both personal and universal. It’s essential to allow ourselves to feel the full spectrum of emotions—from sorrow to gratitude—as we remember the valuable lessons our parents impart. In coping with loss, many find solace in sharing stories, supportive communities, and honoring legacies in meaningful ways. If you’re going through a similar journey, consider reaching out to support groups or mental health professionals who specialize in grief and dementia care. Remember, you are not alone in this path. Sharing what your parents taught you and how they shaped your life can be a powerful way to celebrate their memory and keep their spirit alive.

I lost my grandmother to dementia. It was extremely heartbreaking because you see that smart, amazing cheerful person the deteriorate right in front of your eyes and my mother who is a licensed CNA she took care of patients with dementia my mother said to me it’s hard to see one of your patients slip away, but the hardest thing was to see your own mother slip away and there is nothing you can do about it
