Lyra's life changed the moment her father died and she inherited his crown.
Her father, his High Council, and a flock of tutors spent the first 20 years of Lyra's life training her to rule, but nothing could have prepared her for the storm of secrets that came with her coronation.
However, the crown wasn't the only thing Lyra inherited.
Keeping peace in the realm was going to be difficult enough without uncovering parental betrayal leaving the kingdom on the brink of a war most knew nothing about and former lovers returning with mysteries of their own.
Will Lyra be able to hold everything together, or will she, herself, fall apart while trying?
Reading Bend the Knee felt like stepping into a richly woven tapestry of fantasy and drama that truly held my attention from start to finish. The story’s depth comes not only from the political intrigue and Lyra’s heavy crown but also from the complex emotional journeys of the characters, such as the friends-to-enemies-to-lovers trope and the second chance romance that adds layers of tension and hope. One aspect that resonated with me was the theme of found family, which brings warmth and humanity to the high-stakes drama. It’s refreshing how the book balances intense moments with the softer, more personal connections between characters, making it easier to root for them even as secrets unfold. Lyra’s character development is compelling; her transition from a well-trained heir to a ruler facing unexpected conspiracies and betrayals felt realistic and immersive. The story does a great job of showing how leadership can be lonely and how the weight of a crown can be both empowering and destructive. For anyone who loves fantasy novels infused with drama and romance, Bend the Knee is a must-read. It also sparked my interest in continuing with Fractured Grace, to see where Lyra’s journey leads next. If you’re drawn to stories about resilience, political intrigue, and emotional complexity, this book offers plenty to enjoy.
