I'll never dress my kids in bright colors

jokes aside, there are some valid reasons you may want to consider putting your kids in bright colors, *especially* if you're going to be adventuring in the outdoors or swimming.
when griff was two, we were camping at one of our favorite sites. it was just us, and he's pretty comfortable in the woods. he was helping me gather up some downed wood while Lukas pitched the tent. I crouched down to check on our fire, and when I straightened up, he was just gone. it was a terrifying few seconds before I finally spotted him in his hiding place. he was sitting behind a log further in the woods, head poking out, just watching us.
I can't tell you how many times he's decided to wander off and we've had to stop him and call him back. you take your eyes off them for two seconds, and... 🫣
in his engel wool shown in this clip, it would be tough to spot him. my beloved earth tones also happen to make great camouflage. unfortunately. anything can happen, and it happens quick — kids lost in the woods, grabbed by predators, drowning in pools or lakes — these are all scenarios where time is of the essence, you need to be able to see them. you don't want them to look like part of the landscape.
this is also why I don't put my kids in neutral/muted colored swimwear unless we're playing in the backyard where there's no drowning risk 🚫
besides, life in color is fun!

Dressing children in bright colors can significantly enhance safety during outdoor activities. Earth-toned clothing can sometimes blend into natural surroundings, making it challenging to spot a child at a distance. For instance, when camping or hiking, a child dressed in bright hues is far easier to keep an eye on, reducing the risk of accidental wandering or dangerous encounters. It’s also important to consider swimwear choices—bright colors are particularly beneficial near water where quick visibility is crucial to prevent accidents. When children are in environments such as beaches, pools, or lakes, bright colors help parents keep track of their whereabouts, especially in crowded situations. Additionally, wearing bright colors can encourage children to express themselves and participate in imaginative play, fostering confidence and creativity. Instead of opting for muted tones which may be pretty but less visible, selecting vibrant colors can spark joy in children and make outdoor adventures more fun. Parents often underestimate the impact of color in daily activities and learning moments, but brightly colored apparel can also serve as a tool for teaching and stimulating children's interest in their surroundings. Ultimately, while personal style matters, the safety and engagement of children should take precedence when getting dressed for outdoor fun.

yeah I remember someone did a video showing different swimsuit colors at different depths of water.
