Everyone needs a champion.

From my experience working with learners of various ages, I've seen firsthand how important it is to have a champion who believes in the power of foundational learning, especially phonics. Many older students who struggle with reading haven't had a strong foundation in phonics, which can significantly impact their ability to understand and enjoy reading for meaning later on. Reintroducing phonics to older learners is often met with hesitation because some educators think it's "too babyish." However, I've found that it’s never too late to revisit these basics. Phonics can empower students by boosting their confidence and decoding skills. This, in turn, supports comprehension and fluency, which are critical for successful reading. Having a champion—whether a teacher, tutor, parent, or mentor—can make a huge difference. This person not only provides encouragement but also tailors reading activities that connect phonics practice to meaningful reading tasks. Such support helps learners see that foundational skills are tools, not barriers. In addition, creating an open space for discussion, like the Q&A on phonics, encourages educators and caregivers to rethink traditional approaches. Should older students receive foundational instruction again, or should the focus solely be on reading for meaning? From my viewpoint, it’s a balance. Revisiting phonics reinforces the building blocks needed to unlock deeper comprehension and enjoyment. Overall, every learner deserves a champion to guide and celebrate their progress. When foundational skills like phonics are valued and supported at any age, learners can thrive well beyond initial struggles and become confident, lifelong readers.
