Wow, it feels like just yesterday my little Rottweiler pups were brand new, and now they're already 19 days old! It's truly amazing to watch them grow and develop so quickly. If you're a new puppy parent or just curious about what goes on with 3-week-old Rottweiler puppies, you've come to the right place. I'm excited to share my experience and what I've learned about caring for these active little bundles of joy. At this stage, you really start to see their personalities shine. My pups are definitely super super active, and it's hilarious to watch their clumsy attempts at moving around. While they still spend most of their time sleeping and nursing, those awake moments are full of wobbly exploration. One of them, little Lime, is quite the character – always in the thick of it, sometimes even starting share or playful tussles with her siblings. It’s part of their natural development, learning boundaries and social cues from each other. You can really see that growling confidence starting to build as they interact more! Essential Care for 19-Day-Old & 3-Week-Old Puppies: Nutrition is Key: Mama dog is still their primary food source, and it's vital she gets top-notch nutrition. We monitor their weight daily to ensure everyone is thriving. If for any reason a pup isn't gaining enough, supplemental feeding might be needed, but ideally, mama handles it all. Warmth and Comfort: They still can't regulate their own body temperature perfectly. We keep their whelping box warm and cozy, usually around 80-85°F (26-29°C), gradually lowering it as they get older. A comfy bed and clean environment are non-negotiable. Hygiene: Mama usually takes care of most of their cleaning, but we always keep an eye out. Clean bedding is crucial to prevent infections. Early Socialization and Handling: Gentle daily handling is so important. It gets them used to human touch and helps build trust. We make sure everyone in the family gets a chance to carefully interact with them. This is part of the "newborn puppies care week by week" journey, setting them up for success. Developmental Milestones at 3 Weeks: This is a big week for milestones! Their eyes and ears are fully open now, and they're starting to react to sounds and sights. You'll notice them trying to stand and take their first wobbly steps. Their playful interactions, like when Lime is always fighting (playfully, of course!) with her siblings, are actually crucial for developing motor skills and coordination. They're also starting to try out their little voices, with tiny barks and growls. This early puppy behavior is fascinating to observe! Preparing for the Next Stage (1 Month Old & Beyond): As they approach the 1-month mark, we'll start thinking about introducing them to solid food, a process called weaning. This is a gradual transition, usually around 3-4 weeks. We offer a gruel made from high-quality puppy kibble softened with water or puppy milk replacer. It can get messy, but it's an exciting step! You might also wonder, "when can newborn puppies go outside?" Generally, puppies shouldn't go outside into public areas until they've had their full series of vaccinations, usually around 12-16 weeks. However, short, supervised trips to a clean, private yard can begin earlier for potty training once they're a bit more mobile, typically after 4-5 weeks, ensuring they're safe from extreme weather and potential parasites. For caring for puppies from birth to 8 weeks, these early weeks lay the groundwork for everything. Caring for active puppy breeds like Rottweilers at this age means focusing on safe, controlled exploration and interaction. We provide them with safe toys, ensure they have enough space to move, and limit overstimulation. It's a delicate balance to encourage their natural energy while keeping them safe and healthy.
