After the Civil War ended, Southern states enacted Black Codes that severely restricted the freedoms of newly freed Black people. These laws criminalized everyday activities such as walking without permission or gathering in groups, which were once normal liberties. This system led to the forced labor and exploitation of Black Americans in brutal conditions similar to slavery—working on plantations, in coal mines, and for no pay or unfair compensation. The labor was harsh and inescapable, with families torn apart as fathers and mothers were forcibly separated. Children were also forced to work alongside adults, with no relief. This horrific reality was so entrenched in society that the term "Black Friday" once referred to these days of terror and oppression. It was a time marked by brutal control and unrelenting labor imposed on Black people, rather than the consumer celebration we know now. Understanding this painful history provides important context for why the term Black Friday carries such weight and underscores the resilience and progress of Black communities despite a legacy of hardship. While today’s Black Friday is largely about shopping deals, acknowledging its roots reminds us of the struggles endured and the ongoing journey toward equality and recognition.
