Underemployment after graduation

Let’s talk about the reality after graduation that most people don’t warn you about: underemployment. You’re technically “employed,” but the job doesn’t use your degree, doesn’t pay you fairly, and leaves you feeling stuck.

This happens a lot in fields like English, art, education, and social work, where passion runs deep, but pay and opportunity can fall short. That doesn’t mean your degree was a mistake. It means you’ll need to be intentional, strategic, and a little creative with your next moves.

In this post, I’m breaking down real ways to protect yourself from underemployment, from learning how to pitch yourself, to gaining in-demand side skills, to creating your own opportunities before you graduate.

No matter what your major is, you can build a career you’re proud of. It’s not about proving the statistics wrong, it’s about playing the game smarter.

Drop your major in the comments and I’ll suggest some helpful tips you may have not thought of!
