If I could start over…

If I could start over, I’d choose experience over job titles

this post is for: students, recent grads, people stuck in a fancy title, no “growth” role, or anyone who feels behind because their resume doesn’t look ‘impressive’ yet.

I used to be so obsessed with job titles.

I thought if I could just land something with “executive” or “manager” in it, I’d finally feel left. Like I was actually doing something right.

I’d scroll on LinkedIn comparing my intern title to someone else who had associate…

EVEN if they had less actual experience than me, it still got to me.

The reality I had to learn the hard way is that some of the roles with the best titles taught me the LEAST..

I’d sit at a desk, answer emails, schedule things and then go home feeling like I hadn’t grown.

But the roles that I got my hands dirty, even with no title at all, that’s exactly where I learned the most ❤️

The pressure, the figuring it out on the spot, the failing and trying again, that stuff really stuck with me way more than any label ever did.

Running a project with no prior clue to what I was doing, helping someone launch their small business, volunteering and being given way more responsibility than expected, THESE are the moments that forced me to problem solve, think fast and communicate better.

So if I could start over, I wouldn’t chase the roles that looked impressive; I’d chase the ones that felt uncomfortable but exciting, the ones where I walk in clueless but walk out smarter.

Because I have realized: I DONT care what’s under my name on a resume, if I don’t have the stories to back it up.

If you’re feeling stuck or not impressive enough, I really get it, I’ve been there. But I’ve learned the loudest resumes aren’t always the strongest ones.

Lately I’ve been more intentional about building experience over collecting titles! I’m focusing on projects that push me, roles where I’m trusted to figure things out, and saying yes to stuff that scare me in a good way 🫶🏻

If that’s something you’re curious about too, there’s a quiz in my bio that I’m sharing which actually helped me, no pressure 🥰🤍🤍

... Read moreIn today's competitive job market, many feel pressured to chase impressive job titles rather than focusing on gaining meaningful experience. This article addresses the common misconception that titles define worth. It encourages readers to seek opportunities that challenge them, such as internships or volunteer work, that may not hold prestigious labels but offer invaluable learning experiences. Experiential learning fosters essential skills like problem-solving and adaptability, which are crucial in any career. Aspiring professionals are reminded that authentic stories and experiences often speak louder than job titles on a resume. By embracing roles that may seem less glamorous but provide personal and professional growth, individuals can build a more compelling resume over time. Additionally, engaging in diverse projects can help enhance one’s skill set and boost confidence. It's essential to confront fears and pursue opportunities that may seem daunting, as these experiences contribute significantly to career development. Remember, it's the real challenges that shape us—not the artificial prestige of a job title. Embrace the journey, and your career will be much more fulfilling than simply filling in a resume with impressive-sounding positions.
