What’s One Career You Almost Chose? 👀✨

Before I found my path in public health and AI, I almost went down three completely different routes… dentistry (which I studied!), industrial design, and even psychology at one point.

It’s funny how careers evolve. I used to think choosing “wrong” meant you failed, but now I realize every step, even the confusing ones.. shaped how I think and work today. My dental background still helps me understand patient care, and my creative side plays into building tech that actually feels human.

We put so much pressure on ourselves to have it all figured out early, but most of the people I know ended up somewhere they never expected (and that’s okay!).

So now I’m curious!! 👀 what career did you almost choose before ending up where you are now? Or what job did you once dream of doing as a kid? 👇 I want to read your answers!

Whether it was a childhood dream or a course of study taken up briefly, these almost-choices leave lasting impressions and shape who we become. For example, dentistry, as mentioned in the original post, provides valuable insights into empathy and patient care that can enrich work in related fields like public health and AI applications in healthcare. It’s important to embrace the fluidity of career paths. The pressure to have everything figured out early can be overwhelming, but in reality, careers commonly evolve through exploration, trial and error, and unexpected opportunities. Many professionals have backgrounds that seem unrelated to their current role but offer unique perspectives and skills that enhance their work. Exploring fields like industrial design or psychology can develop creativity, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of human behavior—traits that are invaluable in technology development and healthcare innovation. Such diverse experiences contribute to creating technologies that feel more human-centric and effective in addressing real-world needs. As you reflect on your career journey, consider how previous experiences—even those that felt like detours—add depth and dimension to your expertise. Sharing your story also builds connections with others navigating similar paths and encourages a culture of openness around career development. What career did you almost choose, and how did it shape who you are today? Sharing your experiences can inspire others to see the value in every step of their professional journey.
