Is burnout just part of the job in healthcare?👎🏼

Sometimes it feels like burnout isn’t even a red flag anymore… it’s just expected.

I’ve seen people skip breaks, stay late, and push through exhaustion like it’s something to be proud of.

And honestly? I’ve done it too. Because when you love what you do, it’s easy to confuse passion with pressure.

I left clinical work because I wanted to create something that helps without draining me, and now working in public health and AI, I see how important that shift is.

We talk so much about taking care of others, but barely talk about how to take care of ourselves while doing that.

At what point do we stop normalizing burnout and start calling it what it is. a system problem, not a personal one?

Do you think burnout is avoidable in healthcare, or just part of the system at this point? 👇🏽

... Read moreBurnout in healthcare settings has become increasingly visible, yet it often remains misunderstood or dismissed as an unavoidable part of the job. Many healthcare professionals sacrifice personal time, skip breaks, and push through exhaustion, treating it almost like a badge of honor. However, this normalization of burnout overlooks the systemic factors that contribute to it, which range from understaffing and long shifts to emotional tolls of patient care. One key aspect often neglected is the need for healthcare workers to care for themselves while caring for others. Promoting self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential for sustaining a workforce capable of delivering quality care. Integrating regular breaks, mental health resources, and supportive management practices into healthcare environments can help mitigate burnout. Furthermore, advances in public health and artificial intelligence (AI) offer promising avenues to alleviate pressures within healthcare systems. AI-powered tools can streamline administrative tasks, enhance diagnosis accuracy, and optimize scheduling, freeing professionals from some of the burdens that contribute to exhaustion. The question isn’t just whether burnout can be avoided—it must also be reframed to address the root causes embedded in healthcare systems. Normalizing burnout as an individual failure ignores the structural challenges that demand comprehensive reform. Open discussions about work culture, policies that encourage sustainable workload, and investments in technology are crucial in transforming healthcare workplaces into environments where passion for the profession is supported rather than drained. Engaging with communities, sharing experiences, and advocating for systemic change—these are powerful steps healthcare workers and allies can take. Burnout isn’t just a personal issue; it’s a societal one requiring collective action to create healthier, more sustainable healthcare systems.

YES! It's crazy how we glorify overworking. We need to normalize rest and self-care just as much as we normalize helping others.
