Bible tips to clarify those difficult verses 🫶
In general, we do need context when we communicate with someone.
for example: when I say put it on the “trunk.” without context you’ll be having a hard time knowing whether im talking about a car, a tree, an elephant or something else?
but if you know that we’re in a garage, you’ll understand right away what i’m talking about. That’s why context is important. the possibility of us misunderstanding what God is saying when we’re reading the Bible is higher without context.

When diving into challenging Bible verses, context is absolutely key to unlocking their true meaning. Without context, words or phrases can become confusing or misleading—just like the example of the word “trunk” which can refer to a car part, an elephant’s nose, or a tree’s base, depending on the situation. In biblical studies, this concept is known as hermeneutics, the art and science of interpretation. Before reading any passage, it’s helpful to ask questions such as: Who wrote this book? When was it written? Why was it written? And who was the original audience? These questions help set the stage for clearer understanding. For example, the book of Colossians was written by Paul to a church in Colossae, located in modern-day Turkey, encouraging them in their faith while addressing specific issues they faced. Knowing this helps avoid guessing and starts showing what the author truly intended to communicate. Similarly, understanding that Romans was written to a divided church of both Jewish and Gentile members sheds light on Paul’s focus on unity and faith, making the letter’s message clearer and more impactful. Modern study tools, such as the app Protos, offer quick access to authorship, timeline, background, and audience information, dramatically reducing confusion when reading scripture “cold” or without preparation. Pastors also do this kind of background research to prepare their sermons effectively. Making it a habit to check Bible background before reading can eliminate up to 80% of common misinterpretations. This simple practice leads to a richer, more authentic connection with Scripture and a stronger foundation for faith. Always remember, every verse is part of a bigger story that God wants us to understand, and context is the key to unlocking that story.
