My HONEST review of Corrupt by Penelope Douglas

1/5⭐️ (only because Goodreads won’t let me give zero)

Corrupt by Penelope Douglas — or as I like to call it, a masterclass in romanticizing trauma and calling it edgy.

“Beware the fury of a patient man” — okay incel motto much?

This book genuinely made me uncomfortable. Like… this is lowkey traumatizing. It reads like hardcore torture porn masquerading as a dark romance. And before anyone says, “but it’s fiction,” let me just say: YES, it’s fiction, but there’s a difference between writing dark content and glamorizing actual abuse while pretending it’s hot.

Is Damon the love interest?? Because I’ve lost count of how many times he assaults Erika. Literally, why is the harassment and assault so detailed and drawn out? And when we finally get to the consensual sex scenes, I’m just sitting there like… how is this supposed to be sexy when Erika was just violated?? It’s gross, it’s desensitizing, and it completely downplays the trauma that real survivors carry.

And don’t even get me started on the other men. Every single one is just… awful. I think the goal was to make Michael look like the “least terrible” one? But that’s like choosing between seven moldy loaves of bread — you just throw the bread out.

Also, Erika: you’re okay with assault, robbery, statutory rape, arson, and underage drinking… but not okay with burning down a gazebo because the girl who made it isn’t pretty? I’m not even trying to be funny — that’s literally how it reads.

The writing itself? Mid. Instead of making me feel something, Penelope just tells you what to feel and hopes it lands. Spoiler: it doesn’t.

Let’s talk about Michael — king of empty promises. “I would never let anything happen to you,” he says, while Erika is literally covered in bruises and blood BECAUSE OF HIM. Make it make sense. He was 100% ready to rape, traffic, and extort her over something she didn’t even do. And yet we’re supposed to ship them?? If you told me he’d end up killing her one day, I wouldn’t even question it. He doesn’t know how to communicate his feelings, so he uses violence instead. Cute.

Also can someone explain HOW Erika is suddenly running a multi-million dollar company at 19 with no experience?? Her dad just broke a trust and handed her an empire like she’s Logan Roy.

And why did Michael STRANGLE THE DOGS??? I can’t even.

The “romance” in this book is basically just people with trauma handing that trauma off like it’s a group project. Romanticizing abuse ≠ love story. I’m so tired.

Final note: I’ve seen people on dark romance subreddits saying this book is tame compared to the “good stuff”… and that alone should concern us all.

Anyway, I kept forgetting Will existed. Legend says he’s still drowning somewhere in the background.

If I could unread this, I would. 🫣

... Read moreAs a fellow reader navigating the vast world of books, I've scrolled through countless recommendations for 'dark romance books' and seen Penelope Douglas's name pop up again and again. Phrases like 'best dark romance' often accompany her novels, leading many, including myself, to explore titles like 'Corrupt.' But what exactly makes a dark romance 'dark,' and where do we draw the line between thrillingly edgy and genuinely problematic? My experience with 'Corrupt' really highlighted these questions for me. Penelope Douglas is undeniably a prolific author in the romance genre, known for intense plots and morally gray characters. Her other works, such as 'Nightfall,' 'Kill Switch,' 'Hideaway,' and 'Conclave,' often feature intricate dynamics and high-stakes emotional drama. Many readers are drawn to her style for its raw emotion and exploration of taboo themes. However, this appeal can also lead to significant 'penelope douglas controversy,' particularly with books like 'Corrupt,' which push boundaries in ways that some find deeply unsettling. The genre of dark romance itself thrives on exploring power dynamics, morally ambiguous protagonists, and often unsettling scenarios that deviate from traditional romance tropes. Readers are often seeking an adrenaline rush, a dive into the darker aspects of human nature, or a story where characters overcome immense challenges. However, the definition of 'dark' can be extremely subjective. For some, it means a hero with a shadowy past; for others, it can unfortunately cross into territories that normalize or romanticize abuse, non-consensual acts, or extreme violence. When 'Corrupt' is touted as a 'best dark romance,' it's crucial for readers to understand what kind of 'dark' they're getting into. My honest review of 'Corrupt' stems from feeling that the narrative often veers into glamorizing trauma rather than thoughtfully exploring it. The 'corrupt book summary' might hint at an enemies-to-lovers trope, but the execution can feel less like consensual tension and more like outright violation. This is where the 'penelope douglas dark romance' tag becomes a point of contention. Many readers, like myself, expect dark themes to be handled with care, even within fiction. When characters like Damon and Michael exhibit behaviors that are undeniably abusive, it raises questions about the message being conveyed, especially when these actions are presented as part of a romantic arc. It’s a fine line between a thrilling, suspenseful plot and one that makes a reader genuinely uncomfortable because of the problematic content. For anyone looking into 'corrupt penelope douglas' or other dark romance novels, I really encourage you to read reviews from various perspectives. Understand that what one reader finds thrilling, another might find triggering or offensive. It’s all about managing expectations and knowing your own boundaries. While authors like Penelope Douglas have a dedicated fanbase for their unique style, it's essential to approach books like 'Corrupt' with an awareness of the intense discussions they spark within the reading community regarding consent, character morality, and the responsible portrayal of dark themes.
