If you read and loved silent patient this is the next book he wrote. I was hesitant when I saw reviews that claimed this book was better of the two, but now I know how true that is. This book left me speechless and is my new top favorite read of all time.
It’s complex, dark, intriguing and has elements of greek mythology and history which I LOVED. I have never been so wrong about a prediction before a plot twist but I audibly gasped.
It also relates with a character to his book Silent Patient and now I am going to go back and reread it (its been a few years).
Absolutely amazing!!!

... Read moreI know many of you, like me, were completely captivated by Alex Michaelides' debut novel, 'The Silent Patient.' That book set such a high bar for psychological thrillers, didn't it? The way it unravelled, the shocking twist – it left a lasting impression. So, when I heard he had a new book out, 'The Maidens,' I was cautiously optimistic. Could it possibly live up to the hype, let alone surpass it?
For anyone who adored the intricate plotting and psychological depth of 'The Silent Patient,' I can confidently say 'The Maidens' is a phenomenal next read. It carries that same signature style of slow-burn suspense, unreliable narration, and a truly unexpected conclusion that Michaelides perfected in his first novel. What I found particularly fascinating is the subtle nod to 'The Silent Patient' within 'The Maidens' – a character connection that makes revisiting the first book even more rewarding. It’s like getting a little Easter egg for being a loyal reader!
What elevates 'The Maidens' for me, and why I consider it potentially even better, is its unique blend of a classic whodunit with elements of Greek mythology. If you appreciate a story that isn't just a simple murder mystery but delves into deeper, ancient themes, this book will absolutely hook you. The atmosphere created by the Cambridge setting and the secret society steeped in Greek myths adds a whole new layer of intrigue that was just irresistible. It's dark, complex, and genuinely thought-provoking, much like 'The Silent Patient' but with an added scholarly, almost gothic, twist.
The way Michaelides weaves these mythological threads into a modern psychological thriller is masterful. You don't need to be an expert in Greek mythology to enjoy it, but for those who have an interest, it's an absolute feast. And the plot twists? Just like with 'The Silent Patient,' I thought I had it all figured out, only to be completely floored. I literally gasped out loud! It's that kind of experience you chase as a thriller reader.
So, if 'The Silent Patient' left you craving another gripping, mind-bending journey, make 'The Maidens' your next pick. It delivers all the tension, psychological depth, and unforgettable twists you loved, plus a rich, mythological backdrop. Trust me, you won't be able to put it down, and it might just become your new all-time favorite too!
