As Someone Who has Seen the Process 👇✨

I've started volunteering at a local thrift store (the /White Elephant for those curious! They have a large selection and fair prices if you're in the area and want to check it out (◍•ᴗ•◍)♡ ✧*), and one of the first things that I was told was: "If it has stains, holes, or missing buttons and such, throw it in the recycling hamper. We'll send it to our fabric recycler at the end of next week." It was a bit of a learning curve, I'll say. Some of the things that I saw and thought were fine because of seeing similar blemishes at larger thrift stores were tossed in the recycling hamper for not being up to par, and that's something I've taken into consideration when going through my own clothes.

I filled all 3 containers shown above with old clothes, and as a general rule of thumb that I used when filling them, if there was a stain/hole close to a seam, it could be donated because it could be easily altered off in a noninvasive way. However, if that wasn't the case, then I set it aside to send to the fabric recycler myself. The one that this thrift store uses pays by the pound for undesirable clothing/fabric scraps, and unlike just dropping it off at a big thrift store for them to throw away, I'm helping keep it out of the landfill, and I believe that you should try the same

... Read moreWhen it comes to clothing donation, understanding what is acceptable can be a bit challenging. One key point is the condition of the items. Stains, holes, or general wear could render clothing unsuitable for donation Many thrift stores have strict guidelines; items that don't meet their quality standards are often discarded or recycled. Therefore, volunteering at a local thrift store, like the White Elephant, provides valuable insights into what can be salvaged. It’s crucial to sort through your clothing items carefully and consider their future. Instead of just discarding worn clothes, think about recycling them. Fabric recyclers often accept items that thrift stores would reject, paying by the pound for unwanted textiles. This way, you’re not only extending the life of your clothes but also supporting a circular economy that reduces waste. Additionally, several organizations have emerged focused on sustainable fashion, emphasizing the importance of reusing and recycling clothing to combat environmental issues. By recognizing this crucial aspect of clothing disposal, you contribute positively to both community welfare and the environment. For anyone looking to declutter their wardrobe, these practices not only promote sustainability but also encourage a more mindful approach to consumption. So next time you sort through your clothes, ask yourself if an item could be recycled instead of just thrown away. Your choices can make a big difference!
