Keeping busy
So many of us stay busy not because we love the pace, but because it helps us push our feelings aside.
That’s why rest can feel strange, and stillness can feel overwhelming; slowing down brings old emotions to the surface. Sometimes, it feels like the moment you pause, everything you’ve been holding may come rushing up.
But this discomfort often means you’ve been carrying more than you realised, and now your emotions are finally visible to you. The way to truly process them isn’t by overworking or distracting yourself, but by giving yourself permission to rest, pause, and sit with what’s there.
Your feelings will keep showing up until you make space for them... and when you do, they can guide you toward what you really need.

From my own experience, staying busy endlessly can feel like an escape from the emotional burdens we carry beneath the surface. It’s much like the image of a beach ball underwater—the harder you push it down, the more energy it takes, and the more tension builds in your body and mind. I found that when I finally gave myself permission to stop and rest, a flood of emotions would come rushing up—some discomforting, others unexpected. Instead of fearing this, I began to see it as a necessary step toward emotional clarity. This stillness gave me the space to acknowledge feelings like sadness, loneliness, or unresolved stress that I had been avoiding. Initially, resting felt strange and even overwhelming, but it gradually became clear that it's through these pauses we allow our nervous system to regulate and heal. Over time, sitting with these emotions rather than distracting myself helped me uncover what I truly needed—whether it was support, self-compassion, or necessary life changes. I encourage anyone who finds themselves trapped in overproductivity to try shifting from distraction to presence. Rest isn’t a sign of weakness or losing control; it’s an act of self-care that enables deeper connection with your inner needs. Remember, you cannot hold the 'beach ball' down forever. Letting it rise is a chance to breathe, heal, and grow.
