Hanging in the yard with Mr. Cecil
You know, there's nothing quite like spending a relaxed afternoon in my Arizona backyard, especially when my main man, Cecil Muttonchop, is around. Yes, that's his name! He's my beloved tortoise, and he's truly the king of our desert oasis. I often get asked how he got such a unique moniker, and honestly, it just kind of stuck. He has this distinguished, slightly grumpy, yet utterly charming look about him, and 'Muttonchop' just felt right for his stately presence. Life with Cecil is never dull, though it's certainly slow-paced – in the best way possible! My backyard has become his personal domain, a sprawling playground filled with sun-drenched spots for basking and shady nooks for napping. Living in AZ, you learn a lot about keeping cool, and Cecil has his routine down pat. He knows exactly when to seek shelter from the midday sun under a particular shrub or even in his cozy burrow. It’s amazing watching how instinctively he navigates his environment. He's definitely a creature of habit, but also full of surprises, like when he'll suddenly decide to "sprint" across the yard after a particularly juicy dandelion. For anyone considering a tortoise in a warm climate like Arizona, there are a few things I've learned that really help. Hydration is key, so I always make sure Cecil has a shallow dish of fresh water available. He loves to soak in it sometimes, which is pretty adorable. His diet is mostly leafy greens – think dandelions (his absolute favorite!), kale, and some tortoise-specific pellets. I’ve found that variety keeps him happy and healthy. It's also vital to ensure their enclosure is secure and escape-proof, as these little explorers can be surprisingly determined! And enrichment! Even though he’s a tortoise, Cecil enjoys exploring. I sometimes rearrange a few logs or rocks in his path, creating new little challenges for him to investigate. One of my favorite things about Cecil Muttonchop is the sheer peace he brings. There’s something incredibly grounding about watching him slowly munch on a leaf or take a ponderous stroll across the yard. It forces me to slow down and appreciate the simple things. He’s not a pet you play fetch with, but the quiet companionship and the joy of observing his unique personality are unmatched. He's surprisingly curious, often lifting his head to watch me as I garden or read nearby. He’s become a real fixture in our #azlife and truly embodies those #backyardvibes I cherish. If you ever visit, you'll likely find me out there, just chilling with Cecil Muttonchop, soaking up the sun and enjoying the quiet rhythm of our desert home. He's more than just a pet; he's a tiny, ancient soul who reminds me to take life one slow, deliberate step at a time, and to always have a good supply of fresh greens on hand!
