Learning Spanish with Sol: Jewelry

I’m a language tutor and today we’re talking about the fascinating ways jewelries are named in these Spanish-speaking regions.

Here’s an interesting fact about earrings: It was once believed in ancient times that evil spirits and illnesses entered a person’s body through its orifices. To scare them off, amulets were worn at these entryways, including the ears. Doctors of those times also believed it could cure headaches and improve eyesight!

Earrings:

el pendiente (Spain)

La pantalla (puerto rico)

el zarcillo (Spain and Venezuela)

la caravana (Bolivia & Uruguay)

... Read moreWhen learning a new language, especially Spanish, it’s always fascinating to see how everyday objects like jewelry can have different names depending on the region. This is a reflection of cultural diversity and local traditions that enrich language learning. I personally find that exploring jewelry vocabulary is a fun way to connect language with culture. For example, in Spain, the common word for earrings is "el pendiente," but in Puerto Rico, people say "la pantalla." This difference might seem small, but it opens a window into how language evolves across countries. The term "el zarcillo" is interesting because it’s used both in Spain and Venezuela, showing some overlap in terminology. Then, in Bolivia and Uruguay, earrings are called "la caravana," a term that might sound unusual to Spanish learners but becomes easy to remember once you know the context. In my experience, using flashcards with pictures of these items alongside their regional names can help reinforce these differences. The historical background shared about earrings as amulets to ward off evil spirits is especially captivating. It adds a layer of meaning beyond simple vocabulary learning. This connects language to history and culture, making the learning process more engaging and memorable. For anyone interested in expanding beyond earrings, a very basic term to remember is "collar" for necklace, which is commonly used across Spanish-speaking countries without much variation. This makes it a great starting point before diving into more nuanced regional terms. When studying Spanish jewelry vocabulary, I recommend trying to use these words in real conversations or writing short descriptions, which helps lock in the vocabulary and cultural appreciation. Integrating this knowledge into your daily language practice keeps learning exciting and contextually rich.
