what I crocheted over the summer

over the summer I decided to take inspiration from pinterest and crochet something bright and colorful just like my name.

Yarn: DK or worsted weight yarn in 5 shades: Yellow, Dark Yellow, Yellow, Dark Yellow, and White.

Hook: A crochet hook suitable for your yarn (usually 4.0mm to 5.5mm.

Other: Stitch markers, scissors, yarn needle, and optional elastic or a drawstring

. The Waistband

Measure your hip circumference and chain a multiple of your stitch pattern (usually around 160-200 chains depending on your size). Ensure the chain stretches easily over your hips.

Join with a slip stitch, being careful not to twist the chain.

Work 4 to 8 rows of half double crochet (hdc) or single crochet (sc) in the round to create a thick band. If desired, fold the top half down over elastic and sew to make an enclosed waistband. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

The Color-Blocked Body

For the main body, you will change yarn colors every few inches to create your striped pattern:

First Yellow Stripe: Attach your Yellow yarn at the waist. Work rounds of double crochet (dc) or the granny stitch until this stripe reaches the upper thigh.

First Dark Yellow Stripe: Switch to Dark Yellow yarn. Continue working in the round. To get the "funnel" or flared shape, you will need to add increases.

Increase tip: Every few rows, place 2 stitches in designated spots (such as sides or staggered intervals) to widen the fabric as it goes down your legs.

The Funnel / Flared Hem (White)

To get the dramatic funnel or wavy look at the bottom, switch to your White yarn and work a Ripple Stitch or Scallop/Shell Border. [1, 2]

The Wave Pattern: Work 7 double crochets into a single stitch to create a "peak", then skip the next few stitches and work a slip stitch into the "valley" to force the edge into sweeping waves.

For an even more dramatic funnel, you can increase your hook size by 0.5mm for the White section to make the stitches looser and more flared.

Fasten off the White yarn and weave in all loose ends with your darning needle

From my own experience, working with DK or worsted weight yarn in varying shades of yellow creates a warm and sunny vibe that's perfect for casual outings or even beachwear. One thing I learned when making striped patterns is that changing yarn colors every few inches not only adds visual interest but also allows you to express your creativity uniquely. When working on the waistband, accurately measuring your hip circumference is crucial; a properly fitting waistband ensures comfort and flattering wear. I found using stitch markers helps keep track of increases and pattern repeats, which is especially helpful when shaping the flared skirt section. To achieve the nice funnel or wavy hem effect, experimenting with ripple or shell stitches adds a dynamic texture that really stands out. Additionally, choosing the right crochet hook size can make a big difference. Increasing the hook size slightly for the bottom section results in looser, more flowing stitches that enhance the flare. Weaving in all loose ends neatly ensures a polished final look and extends the life of your garment. Overall, projects inspired by Pinterest or social media challenges can spark creativity and give crafters new ideas. Trying bright color combinations or adding structural details to your crochet items can elevate your handmade fashion. Plus, sharing your progress and finished pieces on social platforms connects you with a supportive crafting community eager to exchange tips and inspiration.
