Being an autism mom is basically…..

4/20 Edited to

... Read moreBeing a mom to a child with autism is an experience like no other. From my own journey, I've learned that it requires immense patience, empathy, and creativity. The challenges often go beyond what most people understand—things that may seem minor to an outsider can escalate quickly due to sensory sensitivities or difficulty with change. For example, a simple sandwich cut the wrong way or a favorite cup being swapped can trigger significant distress or a meltdown. This isn't about behavior or bad attitudes; it's about regulation and the nervous system being overwhelmed. As a mom, I've had to become an expert negotiator, constantly adjusting plans and expectations, managing sensory needs, and providing comfort and reassurance amidst unpredictability. One key insight I've gained is the importance of validating these feelings rather than dismissing them. Saying "just tell them no" or suggesting punishment misses the point entirely. It's not about discipline but about understanding and support. This awareness helps me approach each day with more compassion and less frustration. Despite the exhaustion and complexity, the small wins are what truly sustain me. When my child makes progress, no matter how slight, it feels monumental. Whether it’s successfully navigating a tricky sensory moment or seeing them engage joyfully in something new, these victories are deeply rewarding. Some days, I wear many hats—mom, therapist, advocate, snack dealer—but every day, I show up for my incredible child with love and resilience. For other parents walking this path: Remember you’re not alone. Taking time for self-care, building a support network, and learning about autism sensory processing can make a significant difference. Celebrate the little triumphs and know that your dedication shapes a world where your child can thrive.

Signs of autism and ADHD I showed as a child 🌸
