5 Misconceptions About the Air Force!

As an Air Force recruiter, I hear some crazy things that people think the Air Force does or is about. So, I decided to put together a list of things that hear most often in hopes to clear the air!

1. “Everyone’s a pilot”: only 5% of the Air Force actually flys planes! If you’re scared to fly or of heights, there are plenty of other jobs to choose from!

2. “You have to have high scores on the ASVAB”: the Air Force, although known as the “smart” branch, only requires a 31 on the ASVAB to join!

3. “You have to be physically fit”: when in basic training, they’ll train you to work out and be physically fit. It’s not mandatory to enlist, but it is mandatory to maintain once you’re in (PT test every 6 months or a year depending on your score).

4. “It's all about combat": While the Air Force plays a crucial role in national defense, there are numerous career paths beyond combat roles, including cybersecurity, logistics, healthcare, and more.

5. “Air Force only works on planes”: we have over 130 career options and only about half of those actually do anything with planes!

6. “You’re going to ship off two weeks after you swear in”: average time to join the Air Force is 4-6 months from the time you have your first appt to the day you leave for basic training.

Don’t let these misconceptions stop you from pursing the Air Force is this is what you’re thinking about doing! Make your own opinions from your own experience 😉

I actually have some questions if you don’t mind me asking ? I’m thinking about joining Air National Guard only so I can get my degree in Nursing basically still able to go to school. I am based in North Carolina but would love to move to California with my husband and son , where his immediate family is located.
